Repairing sratched CD's DVD's

What's the best way of repairing sreatched CD's & DVD's that have done the rounds in the kids bedrooms? Nothing too major, but effecting the playback.

I used brasso / silvo to successfully get a DVD working again. I used the stuff that has the scratchie stuff in the tin. (ie not liquid). Have you tried simply washing with fairy liquid, hot water?

I've heard that car wax can help fill in the scratches. You can also buy those kits made for repair just about anywhere for about $20.
