I wish I lived in your neighborhood, I'd be there to cash in. If deer meat is cooked properly it's delicious. I love it. I live in Canada and although there is such a thing as deer and hunting season, I don't know of anyone who hunts. You are very lucky to have all you need, and the price of meat is not so cheap, at least not here. Enjoy

I never had tried deer meat but I would love to try it sometime. My husband loves it. Now that we are here in Texas, hopefully we can try to get some meat one of these days...but definitely not hunting. I wonder if you can buy it at the store. I never thought about that.

LOL Believe it or not, you can find it in the stores. For your first taste of deer meat, let me suggest you try the sausage. You should find it in some of the bigger stores where they keep the bacon and sausage. Just look for the word venison on the label. Depending on where you find it, you can get different mixtures for different tastes. Some have jalapeno in them though, so if you haven't acquired a taste for spicy foods, you may want to avoid these.

I have eat deer meet many times, deer meat little yellowish in our country and its meat little rude that is fibre portion is more than beef or goat meat. We make with it roast and cook other way without much water during cooking - I am do not know to cook so cannot but eating deer meat is fun as there is no huge deer available in our country for hunting or for eating.

Our deer meat here in Texas is very red..We do not have a lot of huge deer but we have some.I think since hunting season opens each year maybe they do not have a chance to get real big...thats ok dear you will learn to cook when you get a big family.I was unable to cook at one time but i soon learned when my children started coming..Thank you

I have not had venison since I was a little girl living in Virginia. I remember it being very good and asking my mom for it for dinner. My parents didn't hunt either and we only got it through family that did, needless to say it wasn't common to have it for dinner on a regular basis. I have had jerky made out of deer meat in my adult years but have a hard time getting my hands on some. I don't know many hunters, which is to say that I have known a few over the years. Enjoy the meat. :)

in india deer hunting is a crime! we protect almost all animals excepting chicken, lambs, cattle.(that too is worshiped in hindu religion but slaughtered by half the population- namely muslims).

Yes, I have eaten it twice. Here, it's more expensive than beef. However, I still prefer beef than venison. Venison has typical smell that I dont like. Beef and chicken are good enough for me lol

Yes, we eat deer meat also know as venison. I prefer it in chili. However, the backstrap is the best breakfast mean ever. Slice it thinly, flour it lightly, salt and pepper, then fry it in some bacon grease or butter. Yummy!

I love deer meat but must admit I prefer pictures. They are so beautiful - the biggest brown eyes you've ever seen. This picture is of deer grazing in a field not too far from my home.
P.S. I lived in Texas for 10 years (5-north of Houston and 5 in Midland) I know Texans claim everything is bigger in Texas but no so of their deer - Texas bucks are about the size of Michigan does.
More pictures from Michigan here:

LOL, they call my area Texas hill country too. My husband is an avid hunter and usually keeps us supplied with a variety of fresh meat, including deer. There are only a few ways I like to eat it though. My favorite is chicken fried backstrap and deer roast. I have learned over the years that vinegar and water works well to remove the game taste. I just don't advise letting it soak for too long or you wind up with pickled deer. EEEWWWW Yuck! Learned my lesson real quick about that. LOL
Take a look at my profile to see a few pics from this past years hunting. Not many deer this year, but the freezer is still pretty full. LOL ;D

My grandfather used to go hunting for deers in the good old 70's and used to say there's nothing tastier than deer meat. My dad says that too... deer roast, deer soup are few of their favourite dishes in those days. :)

that is so cruel. i'm a carnivore by the way, but for some reason i think its so cruel to kill deer. mostly, because deers are such beautiful animals which are often mistreated and killed just to sell their skin or to be hung up on someone's household as a trophy, which seems grotesque to me. i wouldn't eat deer meat.

I know that every country has its different customs..I also know how you can feel it is cruel...In texas where I live ,it is considered the same as beef, chicken, lamb,or goat, its just a meat to eat,so we have a lot of hunters here..They also shoot quail, rabbits, ducks, squirrel,a number of things and it is not considered cruel here...You are right deer are beautiful animals.I have never personally shoot anything, but my boys hunt...I am sorry if you are offended ,and don't want you to be upset, thats just how it is in this country..I totally understand your postion..Thank you for posting.

I love deer meat. When I was younger my Dad would get 1 or 2 a year and helped keep our freezer full all year. Deer meat is good for you too. It is lean and far better than beef. My brother now deer hunts and brings home a few each year, unfortunately we live many hundreds of miles away from each other and I do not get deer meat anymore. :( Here is Florida the deer are small and I don't know anyone who hunts and has extra. I would love some. Deer is wonderful as burger, sausage, steaks etc. You are right, makes awesome chili. :) Even older deer can be made tender enough to really enjoy it.

deers are lovely animals. I have been a strict vegetarian so never tasted any meaty stuff. although people hunt these bucks and go free, hunting on deers that is prohibited in india.

you are so right ,deers are really beautiful animals, the spotted ones are really pretty.Personally, I would never kill any animal and neither would my husband but my boys are hunters so they bring it home..Worse than killing a animal is killing for sport,i think thats wrong to kill for the fun of it so since the boys drag them home ,I will prepare the meat.. I respect your for being a vegetarian, and i do not want to offend in any way...I am sure that hunting is prohibited in a lot of places...We are not prohibited except at certain times of the year...I have never shot anything,if i had to kill it then it would never be killed hee hee..Thank you for your answer..

Hi slickcut,
We live in West Texas and YES - we eat deer meat too. It's not as plentiful here as it is where you are. We don't shoot them either but will take every opportunity we can to buy it and freeze it. It makes the best sausage, hamburger and roasts if you know how to dress it and cook it right.
And I love deer chili.
The best sausage we ever had was made from deer meat. I just wish we had better access.....or at least knew someone who could supply us with it. We haven't had any deer meat in years.
