At what age should girls be told about menstruation?

i think as soon as they are able to understand.obviously by the time they reach puberty they will need to know about it but if they can understand before they reach puberty it's always nicer to have them prepared and ready. besides, girls talk. they will learn from friends or family members about it. it's just much nicer coming from your mother before anyone else...
