We also get a lot of snakes. Most of them are harmless, but, we get copperheads and cotton mouths - both are venomous and the cotton mouth especially naughty. After our son was bit by a pit viper we are very cautious of snakes. We also get rat snakes which are useful to have around, but are quite big and like to eat our chicks or eggs, so we relocate them, no problem. I have heard that placing mothballs around your property will keep the snakes away. A lot of people swear by this method. I have not used them because I don't want the chickens getting into the mothballs and becoming poisoned. Instead I place St Benedict and Saint Patrick medals about the property and pray.

I think there must be other ways to keep snakes out besides mothballs that won't affect your chickens! Sorry to say, but I wouldn't want to live where you are! I don't think I could handle such close proximity to venomous snakes! Especially because your son got bitten by one! I've heard that ammonia is used, but I don't know how effective it is...have you tried looking for other ways to keep them away? I think rd.com may have some tips, they usually have tips for everything. I'm sure prayer works too, and I certainly hope it works for you!! Why is it that you get so many snakes?

I recommend checking rd.com (RDliving) for tips, as I am sure they will have some suggestions of what to use to keep snakes away. You can try the medals and prayer too, prayer works! I've heard of people using ammonia around their house to keep snakes away as well. Good luck!
