Can you spare 5 mins?

Your time is running out... - Death clock.
Singapore
March 5, 2007 7:46am CST
I had a hard time choosing a subject title for this topic. Though I ultimately decided on the above, 2 strong contenders were "Your time is running out..." and "It's alright, there's still tomorrow". (In fact I kept changing my mind. :P) So what is this discussion about? Well, it's about time, it's about tomorrow, it's about you. Of course it's about you! I am sure many of you are familiar with procrastination. "Don't worry, I can always do it next week..." Well, we can think of all sorts of excuses and all kinds of way to put them convincingly. Yet how many of us honestly tried to grab the devil by the horn and deal with it? When faced with a new thing you need to do, how do you deal with it? It may be something big like setting goals for your life; it may be something relatively trivial like deciding whether to finish 5 more posts at myLot before heading for the shower. Whatever the situation is, if something should be done first but you choose not to deal with it, or you decide to put the decision to deal or not deal with it on hold, it is still a form of procrastination. So do share what you do when you are faced with things you ought to do. How do you tackle procrastination? Do you even deal with it to start with? Why yes, why no?

I am part of a different game. I do as much as I can while I can and then sometimes run out of time and then it has to be done the next day. It is all about being organized and doing what calls loudest first. Making a list as you go can help to focus on things that may need done but are not calling loudest. You know the need from experience. You can find the time for something you really want to do if you so choose. So while we are all running about and being too busy, know that we are not alone. The trick is to achieve a balance. Well worth shooting for.

Sometimes a list, normally can do whatever calls the loudest. A multi tasker which sometimes uses a list. Thanks for responding to me.

I am one of those people who cannot put things off. If something has to be done, I want it done yesterday. Ok, I will do something trivial like respond to a few friends topics on myLot but then I will hasten to do what needs to be done. I have lived most of my life and I haven't too many more goals to achieve but I really want to do well with my music. I set aside a couple of hours for practise every day and the only time I will miss this is when I go on holidys. Now, I am off to do what has to be done. Great topic!

I wish I could say that I don't procranstinate-- But I do! I'm bad! I say I'll do it tomorrow-- Right now I should be balancing my checkbook- But I put it off and am on mylot typing instead. Sure I start a to do list at work every monday-- and I accomplish it.. So at work I'm good- Its at home-- Don't get me wrong- I love the feeling of getting it done and being more organized the next day! Things as little as ironing the work clothes on sunday night-- I have every intention.. but here I am every weekday morning pulling out the iron and ironing my slacks-- I sit there and watch tv-- or play a game with my daughter- or read with her.. So yes I put things off-- I could make my life alot easier-- alot more organized-- But I'd also have to give up some very important things! I always say-- If only I had 2 more hours each day... Do you feel this way too?

never quit - We should always practice finishing our task in one sitting. Do not wait for tomorrow. Never ever quit.
I'm one with alexandria here. No matter how many task I should do, I will finished it in one sitting. I hated seeing all my works piled up. I always set a timeframe to do a certain things. No more...no less...I don't like to put too much pressure on myself too. Like I'm cool if I can only post 3 topics in a week. Or gave 10 responses in a day. And mind you, I always go after my goals. Even if I have to go through the tiniest needle holes, I will still go after it. Most of the people here in my country always put off their works until tomorrow. No wonder, a lot of people are starving here. Never quit, that should be our motto!

Don't forget too, bozo...my motto "never quit," so I will not quit begging for your devil's tail. My mouth was full of this orange thing because you kept telling me to munch on my carrots. I better change my motto, "Beware of the devil's tail.", its poisonous...look at my bunny (*o*)

I don't know, bunny. You've got to try harder then. I try to shut out the name of the poster so that I can act impartial. You won't begrudge me that, right?

I once signed up for a class on "How to end procrastination," but unfortunately it was cancelled, because nobody else got around to signing up for it. No, I'm just kidding! I have gotten better about procrastination because I spent some time trying to figure out WHY I had a problem with it. And I found that I procrastinated mostly because I had "too many things on my plate." I'd have a (mental, or written) list of all I needed to do in a day... and I'd be defeated before I started when I'd realize that there was MORE there than I could get done, so I'd waste time because the day "seemed hopeless, anyway." Not sure if that makes sense.... Anyway, by planning days that clearly have LESS in them than I would have time for, I go after the tasks that need doing... and find out that I have time and energy left over when the list is done, and end up doing more stuff. Basically, I'm playing a "psychological trick" on myself, to get past "feeling stuck" when life seems overwhelming. Even though I KNOW what I am doing, it still works, somehow...

you had be waitin till the end findin the topic for your discussion .. yes I have dealt with procastination a lot of times cos I have seen the ill effects of keeping things for later and then realising thats its too late to do it now .. a simple task of tidying my room .. when i say i will tidy things up once i take a nap .. then when i get up i say i will do it once i sip on a hot coffee .. then i say oh there is this soap on tv i forgot to catch up .. then i quickly remind myself to tidy my room between the commercial break and again get on to doing something else then tidying my room up .. and out of the blue the door bell rings and to my horror I see my tiptop aunt in law smiling at me at the door .. i let her in and when she enters my room i have a sorry face to show .. and quickly i escape with a few excuses .. instead of excuses if we learn to do important things on time we would be more relaxed and in control of our life's wagon .. procastination is a bad addiction and must be out of u as soon as possible ..

I have given you a + rating for this post. It is very good my friend. I am not a procrastinator, so I don't deal with it. I have a drive in me to do it now. Not later. I am very organized. But, some people are not like that. They will wait to do something until they are at the end already. It's in the character. However, if one really wants to change, then they must try to do it now, and not later. Not looking for excuses to put it off. That is all one can do.

Well I have to admit with a few things I deal with straight away but there are things that I will delay, like the things that I am going to Bed but before I do I will not leave mylot at an uneven Number, Yes there are things that I will delay a bit but I think a lot of People do. I know I shouldn't as sometimes I forget all about them all together. And then I am in trouble lol.

I find similar to you such as: “Time flies why you are busy at work” “Time flies why we are having fun” “Your time is over…Renew your time for tomorrow” “Time is set, switch on another time” “Time is counted down, keep on another time.” “Time is up, do at another time” My time is limited now, I don't have much time to do all to complete at one day.

See how I procrastinate...you started this 3 weeks ago and I'm just now responding...I think you see how this may go!! LOL..I'm really good with work related tasks..get them done asap...at home it depends on the category!! Immediate need things get immediate attention..projects in the laundry room that is hidden in the basement definitely pushed to the back burner..My absolute worst procrastination is packing for a trip...I'll have the mail held, the milk delivery held, the bills set to automatically pay, the alarm company notified, the laundry done, the dishwasher set to start and be done just before I walk out the door, tha cab called the day before and scheduled pick up time arranged...and guess what...I'm still deciding what to take...the suitcase is filled and emptied, filled and emptied. Things are going, then they are not...it's horrible..I can not make those decisions until the very last second..which is a good reason my last trip to NY ended up with one shoe matching one outfit ( that needed 2 shoes) and 1 shoe matching another outfit ( you're right...there should have been 2 )...I can't seem to change this bad behavior...I can have all my husband's stuff folded and in his suitcase in 10 minutes...suits, ties, belts, shoes ( both), jeans, t shirts...all of it...no problem...but there I am pathetically packing at 3 am when the plane leaves at 7am...and I am to leave on Tuesday am at 7 am this next week...so here we go again..maybe I'll feel enough pressure from this discussion to be ready the night before in a reasonable amount of time with no panic attacks..!!! I'll let you know..maybe you're post will change my pathetic procrastination!!!

I shouldn't be just sitting here at the computer I should be practicing the guitar so I can perform a song on my own. But the need to make money now is greater. If I get on with it I can make a few posts here then go and go and do some guitar practice. The truth is I'd rather be earning to play the piano but guitar is more practical as it's a more portable instrument I just wish I liked playing it more. All this procrastination will cost me if I don't do something about it soon so I'm glad I read this thread it's made me think about it at least.

I think it all comes down to motivation. I am a big procrastinator, and most of my family is for some reason. I try tho to set a better example like when the kids have assignments due I try and reason with them, that its way better now to complete it or at least work on it instead of leaving it until the last minute. I think that when you have to use your brain to complete something and then you procrastinate so much that you rush it in the end you are not up to your full potential and then the assignment, or task fail. When I close my eyes at night I think about the stuff I have to do the next day, if its something I know I "have" to do I will write it down because I dont want to forget it. Sometimes a few things can wait when other pressing things need my immidate attention. I dont procrastinate as much now, I have figured out that its not always better to put of until tomorrow something you can do now.

I tend to prioritize things as they come up. Important things, like paying bills, getting dinner ready, cleaning up whatever the cat has knocked over, those get done right when I need to take care of them. Other things, like folding the laundry or shaking the rugs I have no problem setting aside and waiting until I have some free time on the weekends to take care of them. When I consider long term life goals, I try to set a plan in motion to achieve them, then stick to it. I hate waiting until the last moment then trying to pull things together and finding myself with no way to finish what I wanted when a small amount of planning even a few months before would have made all the difference in the world and made it possible for me.

Oh it all depends on what I am procrasting about if it is something easy then I will do it and get it over and done with but if it is something I have to think about how I will do it then it will of course take me longer to think about it and therefore I procrastinate about it, and wait until I think well I had better deal with this problem and get it out of the way so that I can then move on.

If it has to do with my job, I don't procrastinate. It's a work ethic thing. However, in my own life, I am quite a procrastinator. I just can't seem to get started on things, especially if they involve talking to people (I'm a sociophobe). But I will get the point where I say "Okay this has to be done" and I'll just dive in.

I make list of what I need to do, I might do it when I am on the Internet and something comes to mind that needs doing, I write it down and then I don't have to think about it. I will also put down which day I am going to do it on, I find it helps me a lot. If there is something I need to do during the day that I seem to be putting off I will look at the clock and then tell myself for example that when it gets to 2 o clock I will do the job then. I make myself stick to this otherwise I will put it off all day.

At this moment, really, I'm in a real procrastinating time, if I may say. Because I have my daughter climbing on chairs with her playmate, fighting over a glass of water, etc.. so I had a hard time to decide if I should post my comment now or later. But I thought, may be I won't be able to find your discussion later, or simply forget my thoughts.^^Lol^^. Well, for me, my typical time for decisions making, schedules planning, and others, are usually done at night; when I'm lying in my bed with my daughter beside me soundly asleep. I try to do a mental list of what I have done for the day, the past few days, and for tomorrow. I must say I always achieved to have some kind of a plan. BUT they say, you can never tell what will happen tomorrow. So I think that to procrastinate is also due to unplanned and sometimes unrequested, unfortunate events. However, the WILL to go on, to push thru and finished what you have set your mind on, should be your ultimate weapon and of course, FAITH, in what you do, in the persons involved, the situation and with the help of all the positive energy that surrounds us. I think we would be able to avoid procrastinating. Which by the way I found to be a bad hobby, not habit, its worst.

I procrastinated to think about procrastination, after procratinating enough I thought let me take more time on this and well I never I got around to and now here I am late maybe even last to write in! well jokes apart procrastination in my view is not only laziness, it is also about the job you need to do there the not so good or rather appealing kind of menial jobs which you just want to put off like cleaning out the garage or getting the garbage out on a rainy day ( not pleaseant one ) but eventually one has to do it. I am a great pro in procrastinating when it comes to doing un-appealing menial jobs but there are those moments of energy surge that just galvanizes me into action like a hot, sweet cup of coffee! and that is the time it ( the job ) gets done. It took more than 3weeks to get all the things from my garage put into right places ( we had just shifted and all the packages just lay there day after day waiting for me to open and place them in right places ) then one day I got to it worked 14 straight hours no food, no TV, no distractions and got it done. But yes it took me 3weeks of procrastinating to start on it. Other things like Ironing just gets done when one day I wake upto no shirts ironed state.... and that is cue for me to iron all my stuff!
