I would use at least a 2ghz Intel Core2 Duo processor, either a 965 series or 975 series Intel motherboard with a minimum of 4gb of DDR2 ram.
The video card would either be at least a Geforce 7800GT or an ATI X1600PRO. I would go with a faster card if money allowed.
The hard drive would be a minimum of 320gb with 16mb cache.
I would also have a DVDRom and a DVDRW, or just go all out with 2 DVDRW's
I would also include a Floppy drive or a Floppy/Smart Card Reader Combination. Although there is not much call for a floppy drive these days, every so often someone will try to save some money and send setup and driver files on a diskette. This is really not very handy if you don't have a way to read the disk.
Finally, I would put all this in a case that was well ventilated and had a minimum of 2 120mm case fans. I would prefer a case with a top blowhole for better heat dissipation with another 120mm fan.
I would use WinXP Pro SP2 for my OS. I have several older games that would not run under Vista. They didn't run under XP until I found some patches for them.
Vista is still too new for everything to be supported yet.
I estimate the cost of this computer to be in the neighborhood of about $1400 or maybe a little less.
I use TigerDirect.com and NewEgg.com as my parts sources. Both have advantages in pricing and as to what's available according to what you want to do.

Wow, you've definitely given this a lot of thought. That sounds like the perfect computer. I would go with XP too. Vista is still too new. I would have probably gotten the same things if I was building a computer. I use Newegg and Tigerdirect too you can't go wrong with those two.

Isn't the ATI X1950 much better than the GeForce 7000?

I bet you could build that with about 500-700 if you got them from the right places. Hell I'll build it for you for 4000 though lol.

hi dear each action shuould be based on some proper logistik if i m going to build my own compuer then the main factor of deciding my computer's architecure is my requirement and according to that i will invest my money and arrange the spares.
the most considerable factor is that my machine must be upgradable so that i can meet the future demand

Motherboard: Dual Processor (intel or Asus) capable of SLI
Processor: Quad Core or Dual Core 2.4GHz
Memory: Maximum allowable by the MoBo
Graphics Card: GeForce, 1GB, DDR3, 256bit and SLI capable (means double the power)
HDD: 2TB of Raid5 SATA
Mouse/KB: USB, wireless
CD/DVD: DVD Dual Layer Writer 2x
Monitor: 21 inch LCD plus LCD projector for gaming and movies
Audio System: 7.1 Channel (probably JBL or Harmann Kardon or Creative Labs make)
LAN: Gigabit LAN or Fiber optic or WIFI will do...
Maximum cost I can handle? I don't know... hehehe I have to ask my wife... But above config is my dream config. This system can handle my multimedia needs, from Graphics, to CAD, to Movies, games and of course video editing and authoring...

I will make it as fast possible for the current market. Yes. I will have the latest processor made for home users in this dream rig. Possibly i will include the Intel's Core 2 Duo processors that are latest in the market.
