Im not a billionaire like Bruce Wayne or Bill Gates(slowly getting there..hehe) so saving is a must. Before anything else, we should know the reason why we want to save. I know this sounds silly but its very important for this process. You should have this burning desire to reach that goal. Its like when you want something that badly, you would do anything to achieve it. Do you know why its not easy to save for a longer period? Thats because our mind was conditioned so that we feel happy
when we spend(the feeling of getting that object of desire) otherwise we feel uncomfortable when we save(when we dont get that object). Now thats why its easier to spend then its hard to save. We have to change our way we think about saving. I always feel good when I save on the other hand I feel bad when I spend on something thats not important(disrupts your saving habit). When you are working, the basic thing to do is this: take a certain percentage of your salary and save it(about 10%). Just continue doing this until you achieve your goal amount. You will be surprise that before you know it you will have a big chunk in you bank account. It really adds up. I dont want to sound like im writing a column. Just chill
and save!!

But at least you have your own money when you have a job and you can set aside at least 10% of your salary. But sometimes people who have work tend to spend more than what they earn.

not really because the temptation to spend a lot is there.
You have this thinking that because you have work, it doesnt matter if you spend today you have a paycheck next month. Its a vicious cycle I might say.

... the best thing to do is to put your money in a money-box like when you where a little girl...and to give it to your mother so you can't yield to the tempatation of breaking it.

When I was growing, my mom bought me and my younger brother a piggy bank. She taught us to save as it's very important to have some money for emergencies, and it worked pretty well.
Now that I'm already earning my own money, I opened a savings account as soon as I received my first pay check. And thanks God, my savings have grown a bit since I opened it.
Maybe for now you can still have the piggy bank, or ask you mom to keep a portion of your allowance as your savings.

saving money is a matter of discipline. Even if you are a student or not it still needs alot of discipline. 5 pesos or a dollar a day is not bad. keep it safe and sooner or later of after few years this 5 peso a day savings will be very big without you knowing it. Discipline is the key for a successful savings .. its not the amount. when you get a job someday, you can save bigger amount because you have the discipline in you.goodluck

Same here. And the reaso for that is online shopping!grrr.. I really can't help but adore the beautiful clothes and stuff I see online so I always end up paying for those! haha Because everything's so easy, you get to window shop infront of the computer at the comforts of your home, and when you like something, just pay for it and they'll have it deliver right infront your doorstep.Well anyway,I guess it's all about self control, since im on a very tight budget right now and don't have work yet,I have to stay away from temptation and control myself. It's all about limitations.:)

How about take all the money you have and deposit into one bank account, and then throw away the ATM card and all the document that has anything to do with that bank. But then again, you won't be withdrawing the money for the rest of your life. :P

I am always a heavy spender and the thought of saving my money only comes to my mind when i lose my all money. I try to save money but i am just unable to save my money. I know this is really helpful to save money so that you can get help in the future but i have never been able to save my money, how much i try.

If you are a student, it is quite hard to save because it seems like at every turn there something that need to be paid or your friends wanted to eat at this place, etc. What you need to do is set aside an amount from your allowance and don't touch it. Put it in your savings account or a piggy bank :) Just curving on spending will really help.

I have a large bottle which I use to put my spare change in at the end of the day. I always clear my purse of all the small change and last year, just before Christmas, I cashed up the bottle and found enough cash to pay for a really good Christmas party

i think it has never been a problem for me to save money. i always would spend money on things which are entirely necessary and if i face a day when i have to spend a lot i never hesitate as money is ment to be spend. but unfortuntely it always stays in my wallet and my mother reminds me about it.

Like what parents say: Expenses go higher and higher as kids are growing. Especially when you're a student. Why not try letting someone you trust hide your money so that you can't find it and you wouldn't be able to use it. hehehehehe My sister does that with my brother and works everytime....

this may be an old discusson but i'd like to respond to your question. when i was little too, i was taught to save. i was given a piggy bank to fill up. i was given a year to do so. i was so up to it that in six months, i was able to fill it up. and the reward for me by my parents was, of course, the piggy bank and its content. i was glad to buy a toy car and a chess board.
why can't you save now? i bet you are still studying. with your allowance, you can always save, with a will to do it. of course, you can.
