When someone knocks at 4 am...

You were sleeping like an angel on your bed. Suddenly you were woken up by your door bell ringing. You rubbed your eyes and realised that it was not a dream after all.
You waited a few mins but the bell just kept on ringing. What will you do under this circumstance?
I remembered it happening to me once. I am the only one in the house but it couldn't be someone forgetting his keys - because my whole family was overseas. No sane postman will be delivering at that time. I wanted to ignore the bell but it just kept on ringing.
In the end I went to the door only to realise that my door bell had malfunctioned - I don't know what triggered the ringing, but it couldn't be made to stop. I had no choice but to remove the bell before going back to sleep. :P
But if your door bell starts ringing at 4 am, what will you do? Or worse, if someone knocks on your door at that unearthly hour - a bell may malfunction, but a knock?

I would check out of my bedroom window to see if a car I recognize is in the driveway. That is the only reason I would open the door. If I don't here any screaming or cries for help of any kind, I will not go to the door. If someone is knocking like that at 4 AM, I would call the police to check. The station is nearby.

So if someone is screaming "help!" at your door, you would rush to his/her aid?

Yes, absolutely while I am on the cellphone with police. That way if it is a hoax, the police are on the way. I also have protection in my home and am trained in martial arts, just in case.

I think I would get up (not that I would have much of a choice, I am sure my adreneline would be pumping by now) and try to figure out what is going on.
I live in an aparement building, so I would use the intercom to see who is buzzing at such an insane hour. I would NEVER just buzz a person in blindly (although someone in my building did once, which resluted in my apartment and my neighbor being robbed-so yeah, I'm pretty sensitive on that topic).
If it really is someone in need of help, I would call the police to come help them. If it's just a person messing around, I think I would have some chioce words for them and try to go back to sleep. If the buzzing keeps, but, looks like the police will be called for another reason.

You are right, I was safe and that's the most important thing. I had a long talk with myself about how "It's only stuff". It helped, but I'm still a little bitter :-)

First of all, I'll hardly listen the bell because I sleep like a baby. If I have gone to sleep then no one can wake me up until the sun reaches up. But if it goes to extreme, first i'll open the door and kick that person, if the person is present at the door or just scold him. I would do the same if I was in your place, I would knock off the door bell. It would terrible a door bel ringing on itself LOL..........................

I have had this happen to me, and there was actually someone there. This was some years back-- I was dating this woman and the person at the door was her (somewhat psychotic) ex-boyfriend, who was drunk and under the impression that (A) they had never broken up and (B) she was "cheating on him" with me. This, even though they actually hadn't been together in more than six months.
Anyway, he went away peacefully, after I let him come in and showed him that she wasn't in my apartment (a lucky coincidence, as she often DID stay there).

I will listen first how is this being knocking,if it's so soft and seems nobody wanted to notice it,it's something alarming,I will go to my phone and call anyone near to me or call a police.but if the knock is something loud,I should wait for a while,I will not go to open the door because if the person is a relative or somebody i know they should call my name while knocking.

Guess I have to shrug it off then, I would freak out if I ever knew that there's noone or someone out there that I am not familiar of. Maybe a peek through the window would be my first reaction, investigate and of course keep a good hold of myself before answering it.
I think I just have to make the positive way to react to it and take some extra precautions, just in case.

Unless our dogs start barking or howling, I will not get out of bed. No one that we know ever drops in on us. They always call first. Our doorbell broke from an overzealous religious fanatic. The only bell that still works is the one near our room. All I would have to do is to peek out the window.

I had this happen before at 2am. I answered it. I felt stupid afterward but I was afraid it would wake my son. I did look thru the peephole first and it was a woman that was alone. I thought that she might be in trouble, so I opened the door. Come to find out she was the upstairs neighbor's ex-wife and was looking for her ex and her daughter. She had drove in from out of town to pick up her daughter and couldn't get an answer at their apartment. She wanted to know if I knew where they were. I barely knew their names for Pete's sake!! I was furious! Told her I had no clue and shut the door.

Yes, it happened with me once. It was around 4 am that day (sorry night). There were five flats in that complex. From the road, one can enter thru big iron gate, which gets locked aorund 10 pm every day. Then you walk up a little stright and on your left is another iron gate ( half the size of the main entry gate), which leads to the staircase. In the first floor, the landlady has one flat, Ist floor has two flats, facing each other. Similar way, 2nd floor where on the right side, our family was staying. Ist and 2nd floor flats were on rent.
Soooooo early in the morning, some knocks were heard on the gate leading to balcony of my flat. The sound of the knocks increased and the fellow was frantic. My wife also woke up. She was not allowing me open the balcony door. Since the sound was deafening, I took couraaaaaage to ask the 'alarm' man (voice was from a male) as to who he was. (One bravery award awaits for me). He said that he is the guy who has recently started staying in the first floor right hand side flat and he forgot to take the key for the gate leading to the stairs. In fact, we have not seen him either. He also said it was raining heavily. Calling all visible and invisible gods, I bravely (!!!) opened the door. One guy was standing fully wet because of rains. The fellow just apologized and sought my permission to go thru my house and reach down his house through stairs. We were just present in the scene and nothing was understood.
Next day morning, I caught hold of the landlady and took her to the 'nightmare' guy's house. I had narrated the story. We disturbed him within another 10 minutes. The fellow came out and I asked the landlady to identify that this is the guy who stays in that flat. She nodded her head but fired the guy like anything. Of course, I also gave him. The fellow who was shivering due to night rain bath, almost wept. He was in his mid twenties and was staying alone.

Actually we had a terrific time. Could not sleep in the rest of hours till morning 7/8 am and were discussing about the guy that day and during next one week or so. Whenever there was a knock at door, we used to get alerted. I got a sigh of relief only when the landlady told me that he is the guy who stays in the first floor. There were possibilities that he goes to some flat and does some mischief and we would be blaming ourselves for the misdeed. Thank God, nothing of that sort happened.

Never had this experience before. By instint, ringing my bell at 4am should be something very urgent like fire or robbery. If i was awaken up to found out that the bell was malfunction, i will throw it away from my 13th floor window.

Wow...thats scary.I would be totally freaked out if my bell starts ringing or worse if someone knocks at my door at 4 am. I think I would try to see who it is through the eyehole and ask the person what he/she wanted before opening the door.

the proper way of doing it is to take a peak from a far to see who dat person is.. if you dont know him/her then start ignoring but the thing is what if it was an emergency... will you ever forgive yourself if you cause them something not good?

If someone wakes me up -- and knowing how I don't sleep often..they'd better have a dang good reason. And what's worse if they're a criminal they'd be in for a surprise.
My whole family -- minus my little brother seem to have a talent for fighting..though the women seem to be best at it. My Momma's tiny. She was even smaller when she was younger and she broke several bones in this six foot tall..well-built man which intended to do nasty things to her when she was twenty I think. She had to be dragged off the guy.
I've thrown people into doors and I'm only five feet tall, petite..they've come out with nasty scratches, bruises, and I broke a bone..ONCE. I dabble in fighting techiniques and styles I learn from books mostly.
we're just not people to mess with even though we're pretty peaceful lol.
So if someone's knocking (we don't have a doorbell), I'll take my dagger out from under my pillow and answer the door.

oops, shows I'm getting tired.."I broke one of their bones..ONCE." is how that sentance was going to go..and I meant to add I've come out so far, with one one gash on my hand, no bruises or scratches, or broken bones, some broken jewelry lol..torn clothing, smashed funuriture..which to me is worse, 'cause we're always broke..how're we supposed to replace things? Lol.
I'm not gloating or anything..just how it is. I'm not a pro at fighting..I just..can, kinda well.

Hi wizard, here's another one of my unforgettable experience. It was Oct. 30, 2005 (can't forget this date), at exactly 2 am in the morning, someone repeatedly chimed our doorbell. I was heavily asleep that time and the only people who stayed in my house was my maid and my 2 girls. Hubby was out of the country then. My doorbell kept ringing until I was roused up from my bed. I walked to the bedroom balcony and was shocked to see that a fire had broke out just 1 houses away from mine. I immediately woke everyone and to my disbelef, my maid ran out of the house leaving me and my girls. I don't know what happened to me then. I mean I'm calm, too calm in fact. I brought my girls out of the house and went back to get my purse, my mobile, the big bag that contains all our documents, my girl's uniforms and their schoolbags. Would you believe, I did everything within the space of 5 minutes only. Once I'm outside the house, I called up my sister. When my sister answered, I started to shake uncontrollably and I can't find my voice. Fortunately, the firemen were able to put out the fire immediately. I think what happened to me was that I suddenly had this unexplained surge of adrenaline. You see, sometimes, if there's ringing or someone knocking on your door, it is better to at least check it out. You don't need to open the door. Just use the peephole. We will never know what will happen. Just be careful since you're alone in your house.

You are incredible, my friend. I've always known that and you just reminded me.
Do check out Firefox like what tammyr suggested too. I am on it too and the spell check is one good feature to have. :P

When someone knocks late at night, and it is a when because it has and does happen to me. I always look outside to see the vehicle first. If I recognize it or it is the police I yell "Hold on" and throw on clothes. If I don't recognize it or there is no vehicle, I will throw on clothes, turn on the porch light and look out my door. Then if I don't know who it is I would ask "Can I help you?"
