Driving test - Old people and driving

I have nothing against someone old driving but I can always tell when there is an old man or lady in front of me. Especially an old lady . They seem to drive way to slow they cut in front of you and they never shoulder check. I am not out to condemn all of them but come on some should not be on the road. My dad was a bad driver he used one foot for the gas and the other for the brake. It was a recepie for an accident. Last year an old man crashed right into me for lack of looking to see if someone was coming. I was so mad but yet I felt sorry for him. I just think some people should be tested to see if they are still fit to be on the road.

it a fact that most accidents are caused by old people and yes they are very anoying they should retake the test, or restrict people from driving beyond a specified age

Your statistics are where? I'm sure it is more of a fact that younger people cause more driving accidents due to lack of experience. There is nothing more funner than having a fresh just passed a test "learner" driver who thinks they know everything.

Most accident are casue by males in the 16-25 yr old range but the girls 16-25 are catching up too fast. Soem places in europe it can take 5 yrs to get an unrestricted license and if you are getting lots of tickets they put restrictions on no matter how old you are

Yes, I think it'd be better for us all lol. Once you reach 65 years of age, I think people should be required to take the driving test again. If they're still capable of being on the road, they should pass with no problem, but if they fail, clearly, they shouldn't be allowed on the road until they prove otherwise. Let's face it, you get older...your sight goes, your hearing goes, your perception gets a little off, etc; Your senses just aren't what they used to be...but you need these things in relatively great shape to be a safe, alert driver. I honestly think if a law was passed for this, there'd be less accidents on the road. In the elderly's defense, teenagers can be just as bad these days, but for entirely different reasons.

I do feel that older people should retake driving tests as well as taking the written exams to see if they remember how to drive and what the rules are locally. You can get ticketed here for driving too slowly on the highways. I think people of all ages need to retake driving tests, not just the older ones. People of all ages are driving recklessly these days. I have been caught behind some older people driving way below the speed limit.

They are required to retake the exam every once in a while, and its absolutely important for older drivers to get retested. I can't stand when I get stuck behind an elderly driver going 10 mph under the speed limit. And they never turn their signals on/off either.

Sir - should people drive to the Speed Limit or to the Road Conditions and their own circumstances? I beg to disagree that people should consistently drive to the hilt of the "speed limit". Kind regards.

I agree that older people should be required to pass a driving test. But at what age are they considered old? I know some young people who should retake the driving test. Maybe it should be that everyone takes the driving test at regular intervals.

Everyone should have to redo the test every 5 yrs so we can get some of the people who do not know how to use the merge lane, turn signals, speed limits, stop lights, tailgating and all the other things people do or do not do that are breaking traffic laws. If you get a ticket you should have to renew your license sooner. As i tell people driving is a privlage not a right.

I agree with you some of them should be reexamined for competency. But they find ways to avoid having to go in to the DMv for that reason as they get older. That is why they payh their registration and renew their licence by mail.

Sorry to hear that. I think the older people should not drive a car due to their age and their sight. They should take the service tricycle, taxi or public bus. They will make the traffic in the city slower than usual. I am not old but I don’t want to drive it on the road, because I drive very slow, I am afraid every body will tell me off the road, or practice more before getting into the main road. The old people can drive in the countryside.

I personally think that EVERYONE regardless of age, should be tested on their driving skills every 5 years. There are a LOT of bad drivers out there. Not just elderly people, but bad drivers of all ages.

I just had to respond to this discussion. What is old? I am 65 years of age and I recently quit driving due to spinal stenosis-herniated disk as I would not consider myself to be in tip top condition to drive now. I am in pain most of the time while driving and it is not safe to get behind the wheel. So age is not as important as how well a person is both physically and mentally to drive.

i think that if most of the older people would have to retake driving test most of them won't be driving..lol but it is true, they have many problems, eye problems and alote of other things. i think that yes they should retake the driving test again. but i also know as you do that alote of them won't pass this test. by the way when you say older people to what age group are you reffering?

Most definately. Not all are bad but i would say most of them are. My dad wad driving instructor and when we used to go to the football he used tio pick me up after i tried desparately to refuse the offer and make an excuse so he wouldnt drive and i would...he was pretty bad then whilst in employment but now he's worse. I dont go the football anymore!

Yes, I think people of all ages every X amount of years should retake the driver's test. I can't believe that in the state I live in they just handed me a license until 2011 and I didn't even take a test. All I had to do was come from another state with a driving background and a valid license. Frightening.

I think the government is not going to allow this older person to be on the road if they are not capable anymore.anyway just give patience to the older ones.accidents happens because of the negligence of the driver.

I agree bk, most old people are unfit after a certain age. They are not only putting themselves at risk but others' safety too. It is best if there is a different kind of driving test for such older people, which on passing they can deemed fit to stay on the road and hold on to their licenses. This reminded of an episode of Everybody Loves Raymond, where Peter Boyle's is a rash driver and he in fact is required to take a test to renew his license or something. Though he hardly follows the rules he manages to get his license renewed for another 20 years..LOL Jokes apart, I think its safer to let older people be off the road than on one.

I have often contemplated this issue. I can't really put a definitive age on retesting...as some older drivers do just fine. But yet, many are on numerous medications that impair thier reaction time. I feel if the physicians prescribe certain medications then they should forward something to the DMV...yet that is a violation of the elder's medical privacy. I don't know what the clearcut answer is. But for sure, there are some who need retesting. I guess the only way would be to restest everyone after a certain age.

Well I think we should not get that specific for implying the idea . My opinion would be that this should be done for everyone .ie. There should be a retake after every two to three years for every license holder .To add to that in countries like India , Elders are better drivers because they drive in a very slow and steady manner .Do write to me about your opinion on my idea .

I know in IL they have to retake the driving test every few years. That cuts down on some of the old people that are no longer able to be on the road. I was on my way back from WI not to long ago and I followed this old guy most of the way home. He was driving 100mph and he was using turn signals and everything. He was like 70 years old at least. There's a few exceptions out there but not very many.

yes , because the older they gets their body responce or their senses becomes weaker... but not applicable to all adults.
