The best place to start is controlling his fluids intake.
Watch pay attention to how long it takes for him to have a wet diaper after having fluids, then time things so that you put him on th epotty when he would normally have a wet diaper. At the same time, pay attention to when he has a "full", not wet, diaper. Try to get him to the potty when this is about to happen also. Don't let him play, listen to music, or anything else that might distract him. You need him paying attention to what he is doing so he learns faster.
Once you can get through a couple of weeks like this, start putting him in training pants. Don't get disposables, you want him to be uncomfortable if he messes himself. That way he will choose to avoid that feeling by going to the potty.
Most boys can be trained to use the potty before they are 2 years old, so don't let people tell you that they can wait until they are three. The sooner you get this task accomplished, the sooner he will understand that some expectations cannot be negotiated. This is an important step.

I disagree with whoever said not to buy training pants..they were a blessing..In Walmart they have 4 wheeler pullups for boys..my son loved them and i told him id buy them if he started peeing in the potty..soo it started..I then would put him sitting down on the big potty..he wouldnt do it in his little one..and i told /and hwoed him by grunting lol..how to pee..hed laugh then he would try..it became i game..that made him pee..and i tok him everyday half hr..as he started ot get the hang of it..with accidents of course..He got better than I took him to look at real undies..he loves SPiderman..and Sponge Bob..and i said to pick what he wanted..and then explained..mind u he was soo excited he was ready to burst lol..that he couldnt wear them untill he always peed and poohed..in the potty..and that they would be waiting for him..within 4 days..he was totally potty trained..Thats what worked for me..ohh and little hot wheel cars for prizes once a week for trying..that kept him interested in keeping trying..:)
