I have known no one who admires their politicians.Have you known someone who does? Do you think they are the best you could have? If Not,then what is that ''One'' thing you want to change in your political leaders,if you could?

There's a general problem with politics, in my view, which is that the people who'd be best QUALIFIED to the job of anything from Prime Minister to local official generally don't have ANY interest in the job, and too many people whose main motivation is merely "to have power" run for political offices without really having much to bring other than charisma and "looks good on TV." Of course, there are a few exceptions, but not many. Offhand, I can't really think about any ONE thing I'd want to change in politicians, but I would like to see changes to overall laws that made political races (at least in the USA) less of an issue of "who can raise the most campaign funds," and more of a matter of the actual issues at hand. For example, it could be something like every person in the country pays $3 a year with their annual taxes, and when election time comes, each candidtae gets the same sized block of money to campaign, and that's all they are allowed. Remove the monetary incentive. Big business and lobbyists can't "buy" a candidate, and "alternative" candidates with good ideas but lack of funding aren't left standing in the shadows.

I like your concept of $3 per year it makes sense. Otherwise, businessmen keep bribing politicians for favor and the vicious cycle of corruption continues...

The real issue here is that Office in charge of getting money can also be corrupt, as they will be very probably politicians too.

What I would like most to see in all politicians is to say what they mean and stick to it. They waver back and forth so much, according to the latest polls, that it is difficult to know what they actually believe.

If god gives me chance to remodel the politicians then I will put some integrity in them so that what they promise at the time of elections they do fulfill it.

I would make it so that they could never lie. Then we would know what they really had in mind in making it into office. Then we would know if they were going in on our behalf like they are supposed to. Wouldn't it be more interesting to see them debate without lying?

Politicians represent the scum of the earth at the highest level. No, i do not think they are the best, in fact they are pathetic slimy snakes, who owe their electorate a lot of answers, for breaking promises. The one thing is i would like to change in politicians is that to hold them accountable for the promises they make to the people.

Its almost impossible to admire politicians for reasons we all know very well. I know my elder daughter admires Dr.A.P.J.Abdul Kalam for his deep sense of patriotism, his noble thoughts and principles (which she has read about in his books) and his faith in the youth of india. But ofcourse he cannot be put in the category of a politician. Barring a few leaders of the 40s and 50s,rest(almost) have disappointed the masses. They are certainly not the best we could have.We deserve a lot better than what we have today.Or,rather, the situation would be lot better if we don't have them at all.Lol. Our nation should be run by sincere administrative officers where final selection should be done,if they pass practicals in humanity and moral principles.:-) I know it sounds funny. Well,If one thing I could change in our political leaders,it would be their mind which is generally full of opportunism, short sightedness and selfishness to a mind which is full of sincerity, compassion, intellect and the mind which commands the heart to throb for the upliftment and love for the masses. Wow,even the mere thought of it makes me smile. Bluewings thanks for giving the opportunity to visualise such a beautiful(though very unreal)picture.

:-) I have read 'India-2020' by APJ and I ,too, admire him.You know,if there were the exams on humanity and morality ,they would pass it;-),but both of us know how they would pass.I am afraid, there seems to be no panacea for politics.:) Those qualities would make the perfect politician:)Anyone would be proud to have their(politicians) posters on their walls.I am not giving up the hopes yet :-)

That they could give a straight answer and not skirt around the truth, when you ask them a question they go out of their way NOT to answer but to come up with diatribe which is nothing to do with the question, if they don't know the answer then say so or be honest, without covering it up!

Yeah, they play the game to cover up their shortcoming .They are scared to come clean because their negligence of duty will become transparent.I too wish their accountability could be raised. Thanks,Wolfie!

I am a firm believer in that you do not offer criticism unless you have an alternative suggestion. I think the biggest thing wrong with politics, as distinct from politicians, is party politics. The problem is that I don't know how a government could work without party politics. If I could change one thing about politicians, it would be to allow them to follow the wishes of the people they represent, instead of being dictated to by their party. I have known politicians who have been forced to vote for things against their conscience because the party dictated it.

Yes,sometimes the pressure from the party to go with a bill that might not be in the interest of people ,but might benefit a handful that voted them in ,makes the representative decide in it's favour to protect the votebank. If the politician answers his conscience and takes the right decisions irrespective of his party's stand, then he will gain trust of his people and chances are that the party will reap the rewards. The shortsighted mindset in some ends up affecting the majority.

I don't have grudges against any politicians... lol... however I don't admire them either. Until now I haven't seen a leader who did something solely for the purpose of the public. I mean... we are all human beings and it is natural that people has tendencies to make mistakes. If I am given a choice, I would tell a politician to lessen his speech and just double up on his "hands-on". What I see now politicians talk more but act less. This is the area that I hope can be changed. Thanks for giving me the opportunity to reply to your discussion. Have a nice day. Here it is morning 9:15 am.

Stop the petty party bickering and take a real interest in improving the country instead of trying to further their own political careers.

Politicians here in my country are generally TRAPOS meaning tradional politicians same words, same promises but less actions and more money for thier own pocket from the government fund. I do really hope that one day we have a politician that really opt to serve for their country unselfishly not only for personal gain and I really think in this lifetime I can't find anyone fit that qualities. To bad!

Same here. There are counted few whom I truly respect and the rest are weeds.Until now the youth was afraid of getting into politics. The situation is changing as an awareness of responsibility in rising.I hope that it changes in your country when you become a lawyer. Ah,thanks for adding a new word to my vocabulary!

the "one" thing that i would wish for them to change is their attitude towards their responsibility. here in the philippines, politics is very hot, to the point of some murders and all disgrace. i wonder how largely they are paid. in think, their salary in Phillipine currecncy could hardly afford luxurious vacation out of the country, in a year with their entire family. i wonder what is their motivation. anyway, i think that "one" thing i want them to change is their attitude of service. service which they had vowed to give to the benefit of the nation, not ot their own agenda. (money, power ...i dont know what more they want)

I would like to be able to swap their bank account with the one from a non-governmental organization. For example I would like to swap Uncle Bill bank account with Greenpeace's one. What do you think?

I too dont admire our politicians, if there are one thing that I could change from them is there attitude. Politicains here in our country is hot headed and take their personal problems with them. They dont show open mindedness and they are red necked.

Yes, having so many people trusting them with their future ,politicians need to live up to the public expectation to win their respect.Perhaps it only goes to show that the ones who care have to become proactive to change the system. We begin making a difference with a public opinion.Thanks,J3rvic :)

For the Philippine politicians I wish they'd stop their greed. And stop whatever that is that makes them so desperate to win.

It's a different case we actually have in our country. Most of our politicians are corrupt. Corruption per say is already a social cancer that we have. So i don't have any idea what to change or what to correct with them. Wiping them out maybe will help hehehe.

lol Yeah, the elites in the corporate sector in our country believe that doing away with the government will be a Massive reform and help the economy grow with geometrical progression.
