The band Finger Eleven wanted to know, so I thought I can start a discussion here! Mine was the Outsiders by S.E. Hinton - they made us read it in Grade 8. But it sure got me hooked! What about you?

I really can't remember what book first turned me on to reading... I've always enjoyed reading. I still have a compendium of children's stories I got for Christmas in the 50s. It's a little worse for wear, thanks to my younger sisters and the use of cheap paper & binding method, but I still have it on one of my bookshelves.

The danish author Dennis Jürgenson was the one that really made me want to read. I still love his books, even though I'm getting a bit too old for most of them.

My grandmother got me hooked on reading when I was in 6th grade. She got me started with the Nancy Drew/Hardy Boys collection. By the time I had the whole collection, it was pretty rare to find me without my nose being buried in a good book. Outsiders was a good book too. By the time I read it in 8th grade, they also had the movie out.

You know I cannot honestly say what the first book was that got me into reading. When I was a little kid, say 7 or 8, my mother always took me to the library and enrolled me in the reading programs. Before that I was always reading at home so it feels like I've been into reading since forever. I do know that when I was ten I was obsessed with Sweet Valley High though.
