dirty ears!

My 7 year old half-Golden Retreiver/Lab/Shepherd mix has awful ears and has had them for a long time. The vet told me it was a food allergy and we put him on Purina One. No change. I keep cleaning them with peroxide or boric acid and other meds that the vet gave me, no real change. They are not as "wet" as they were but still smelly. Does anyone have a home remedy that works for their dog? His ears do flop down and he is a furry, outside dog. Thanks!

Diamond wings,I would rinse them with 1 cup vinegar to 1 cup warm water at least 2 times a day 3 to 4 times are better......then spritz them with 1 part treetree to 10 parts olive oil...Just before you settle down for the night wash them off with a mild soap and water..dry them completely and put hydrocortizone ointment on them..The next day start over again beginning with the wash of soap and water ..then the vinegar and water..and so on..I used to have a donkey that had an allergy so something and broke out all over.I tryed what the vets said then went to my herbal notes that I collected over the years..then added the ointment for good measure...It will look worst before it gets better and as it heals it will itch like crazy so you might want to devise a neck collar cone to keep the paws off.Good luck and if you think it is getting too dried out too fast cook some oatmeal slowly until it is a mush and you can no longer see the oats..Rub a thin layer on ...leave it till it drys on and let it flake off for a few hours then wash it off being careful to dry it thourghly. The oatmeal works well for hot spots also if you add a little teatree to it..

I think it would be a infection on the ears. you need to carry your dog with a veterinary and check it. your dog would get a serious illness.
