I was watching the Oprah Winfrey show one day, did anyone see that show about how often you should change your tooth brushes? and where you should not store them. They said you should not store them anywhere by your toliet. or sink. I think you know why. I usually store my tooth bushes in the medicine cabin. and I change them every 6 mos. I always keep plenty of toothbruesh, for when my grand -children come over. Where do you store yours? and how long to you keep them? have a good one!!

Personally, I think the whole "keeping your toothbrushes 10 feet away from you toilet thing" is a bit overblown. Sinks are almost always like, right next to the toilet and we've been keeping our toothbrushes by sinks for about as long as indoor plumbing has been around. So far as I know, there has been no huge epidemic caused by toothbrush-borne diseases, it is usually people not washing their hands properly that spread such illnesses.
Besides, if "poopy" germs are able to get on your toothbrush by it just being on the sink, then they are on every surface of your bathroom and you would get them just by touching anything and then touching your eyes, nose or mouth. And then you would further spread them by touching the other things in your house, so it wouldn't really matter where your toothbrush was, you would still be exposed.
But, I ramble (er, rant?) on too long....in answer to your question, I keep mine on the vanity top of the sink and replace them about every 6 or 9 months. I also occasionally "freshen" them up by letting them soak overnight in mouthwash to disinfect them.
:-D

I agree with you, this does sound a bit overblown. If it really was so dreadful then this would be known in other countries too, but no-one in France even mentions it. Having said that, I never flush my toilet without putting the lid down first, it's a force of habit. We keep our toothbrushes upright in a container on the sink and replace them every 6 months.

I agree! Your whole bathroom is contaminated anyway. I keep my toothbrush out on the sink in a cup that gets cleaned weekly. I'm also very adamant about keeping the lid down when the toilet is flushed, because i have a dog that will help himself to the water. I've been told that prevents some kind of microspray of dirty water, but i never really knew i fthat was true. I just don't want my dog drinking toilet water that has a bleach tablet in it.

I understand the point.
Normally I wash my tooth brush before using it.
It's true that there must be many bacteries in toilet, but it's a risk I assume.
Normally we are exposed to big amount of different bacteries, for example in a bus, in an elevator when someone is sneezing inside it.
Anyway, suggestions are always welcome :)

Good points. Gee I don't know I guess I try to do them every six months but have the time I don't remember when that is. So I guess when they get pretty flattened out or the bristles are all bent. I keep them in a toothbrush holder but it is by the sink so I guess now that I think of it, it's not a good idea. Thanks for posting this.

We change our toothbrushes every 4-6 months. I don't keep them on the sink but close by in a toothbrush holder. I thought about getting one of those sanitizer things to kill the germs on toothbrushes.

Mine are in closed medicine cabinets. I change every three months. More often if I get a serious cold. From time to time I will soak them in mouthwash or peroxide to "de bug" them. I save the new toothbrushes, etc. from the dentist to give to visitors if they forget theirs, as I like a different kind than he gives out.

I store my toothbrush inside my medicine cabinet. I change it about every 3 months but I also have a Sonicare battery operated toothbrush for a backup to use. I will replace my toothbrush when they bristles get wore out or bent to an angle. The bristles will no longer get up into my gums and between my teeth to clean properly. I brush my teeth about 3-4 times a day so mine gets worn out alot faster, I think.

I know this might sound odd, but I store mine upsode down in a cup of Hydrogen Peroxide. I use a small party cup filled about 1/2 way full. I wrap tinfoil over the cup, pop a whole in it, just big enough to fit the toothbrush through. I change the H2o2 daily. It is good for your teeth and great for your gums. H2o2 will kill germs and brighen your smile. Hope that helps.

If you brush twice a day then you should change your toothbrush every 3 months. I usually store my toothbrush in a toothbrush holder. That way i keep it away from germs and water.

After watching the Oprah Winfrey show one day, I decided that the best place for tooth brushes would be anywhere but not near the toilet as there may be bacteria lurking nearby. Some people change their brushed only after the bristles get flayed, but I prefer to change mine every three months. Also I have plenty of tooth brushes in store for guests who come and stay and have forgotton to bring their tooth brushes.

i keep mine in a plastic container that came with the toothbrush. and i change it every 3 months, as what my dentist says. i haven't seen that episode in oprah, but come to think of it, we just have to be vigilant about keeping our surroundings clean because germs are everywhere! it's not really just about a toothbrush but everything else that comes in contact with your body!
