How do DDR machines in arcades get upgraded?

There is a CD-ROM that you put into the drive. Then the machine will install the pack. Then they put on the new body parts. Though, this will overwrite all of its previous data, so you will lose all the songs from your previous version (i.e. DDR Extreme to DDR SuperNOVA)

Whether by online link or ROM chips i would guess. Interesting question. I wonder if that's the same for games like Golden Tee golf.
