Trying to remember an old cartoon about a boy & a train

I'm trying to remember an old cartoon from I believe the late 70's early 80's. I live in Canada, so this may have been a Canadian show, but for some reason I believe it may have been American in origin.
It was about a young boy (can't remember his name) who lived in a city. He found a train near his neighbourhood which would "come to life" so to speak, and travel from this city into a fantasy world and take him on all sorts of adventures. Within this fantasy world he had a friend. His friend was a girl with yellow star-shaped hair.
Does anyone remember this cartoon andr what it was called? It's driving me crazy!!

OMG!! Eureka! That's it! Thank you so much! This has been driving me INSANE all day long!
In fact I found a link about it online since you have given me the name of the show and I could properly look it up. I kept mixing it up with the show about Simon and the Land of Chalk, since the main character's name in The Secret Railroad is also Simon.

And you know my name is Simon, and the things I draw come true. They will take me take me take me climbing over the garden wall with you. (not sure about the garden wall part) I loved that cartoon when I was a kid, and the song has stuck with me all these years. Simon would climb the chalk ladder and have all sorts of adventures. Would that they bring back such kind hearted and delightful cartoons. I am going to go check out your link now.

I don't remember any old cartoon about a boy and a train. However, I do remember the recent movie about boys and a train. Was that Polar Express or something like that? :P

The protagonist was a kid named Simon, who once took the elevator in his apartment building down as far as it could go, and found the train that travelled the Secret Railroad. When he took the train out onto the Railroad, he picked up a passenger (named... uh... Mr. Passenger, actually) and his cat (a stoic little fleabag named Melanie).
Is this the one?
