As quite a few of you know Lizzie the Lizard took up residence. I have 3 dogs, feed the birds and the hummingbirds. I think somehow Lizzie let others know I was a pushover because this morning I had a newcomer at my patio door looking for food. A squirrel! Yes I know and have been told already to day that they are rodents just like rats! But I dont care he/she was cute. Now I need tips on how to feed them (as long as the dogs are asleep they are pretty safe). I always keep my camera handy so I took a couple of photos.
WHAT is on the menu, what do I feed them?

oh you are funny--- I love squirrels and leave them nuts outside in front of my house- but if my husband caught me i would never hear the end of it.
they got into our attic once and made such a mess and then got into the ceiling above our bathroom and nested- they almost dug a hole through the ceiling and came into our bathroom- fortunately we figured out where they were getting in and after the babies got out we sealed it up.
If you want to feed the squirrel, get some nuts (any kind- tey don't have to be opened believe me they are more then capable of doing it themselves)and hang them from the tree near your house in a kind of bird feeder thing, do not feed them near your house- you may be sorry.
oh and you can leave some material or soft stuff out by the tree in like november or December in case they need nesting material you don't want them stealing your stuffed santa from in front of your house...lol..lol.

I love to watch squirrels, but I hate rats. It is so funny we will kill a rat in a second, but have a wreck to avoid a squirrel. I have a lot squirrels in my yard and always try to pics of them. They run up and down a big pine tree out front. I have no idea what they are hoarding we don't really feed them but they are everywhere. I do know they LOVE bird seed we put out for the birds. But I am sure they also love acorns and fruit I think. I found this online for you; What do squirrels eat?
Most squirrels eat nuts, seeds, grain, and fruit. By far their favorite food would be nuts, followed by sunflower seeds. Urban squirrel have adapted to eat just about anything, including pizza, luncheon meats and all forms of snack foods. Squirrels have been known to eat bird eggs, but this is a last resort. When natural food is scarce, they will eat anything they can find.

They love everything you put in your bird feeder. LOL, and peanut butter, and nuts from nut trees, and dried field corn. There used to be a man that made homemade squirrel feeders that involved a little table looking thing that held either a corn cob or shelled corn in a basket. When the squirrel ate at it he looked as if he was sitting down to dine.

That sounds so adorable, I wish I had squirrels but no nut trees means no squirrels.

He's very cute, and I rated your photo and wrote a brief comment.
But how is this squirrel going to get along with 3 dogs and your green lizard?
I can't offer any advice about feeding, as we don't have squirrels in Australia. Plenty of koalas in my area though..,.

Many lizards feed on insects or rodents. Squirrels like to feed on seeds and peanuts. But be careful, when a squirrel is let into your room it may bite on you couch or other furniture.

Lol, that squirrel looks a rather happy dude right now LOL. I think Lizzie definitely spread the word about you :P
As for information on Ground Squirrels, I found some information about what they like to eat.
Primarily herbivores, ground squirrels eat plant material, including wild fruit plants, seeds, succulents (such as ice plant), and grasses. They also prey on insects, the eggs and young of ground-nesting birds, and, occasionally, small mammals. They eat much food where it is found but also carry seeds in cheek pouches to build up large stores underground.
They do say that if you're going to install a seed feeder for them, make sure to get a secure free standing one as opposed to a hanging one. I've seen a lot of squirrels eating the nuts and seeds from bird feeders so that might be an idea too.

Oh you are so kind to take care of all these animals! I have feed peanuts and birdseed to the squirrels. Well actually I fed the peanuts they stole the seed. I have heard that they like dried corn on the cob. Some pet centers sell feeders that you hang and stick the cob on a spike in the feeder. This would keep them safe if the dogs wake up. Good luck and keep the photos coming.

I'd rather just plant the kinds of things they naturally eat that way I'm not messing with Mother Natures design

You can get squirrel feeders at Wal-Mart. It has a nail on that you put a corn cob on. The squirrels like to get the corn off the cob. Some times they will bury the kernals. After the corn is gone from the cob you can take the cob into your kitchen and put it on your counter and it will keep the sugar ants away. It has always worked for me. It will drive them waway very fast and safely. You will kill two birds with one stone.

Heya, I have often wondered if animals spread the word this way as I have a friend who feeds the pigeons here and she had recently started having many other types of birds coming to her place also, ones that do not even eat the same foods as pigeons like kookaburras and honeyeaters.
I think maybe your place has an animal friendly vibe which is just great in this world where humans dominate just about everywhere.
The squirrel is cute, but I have no idea what to feed it sorry as we do not have them here in Australia. Tanika.
