I volunteer a ton and actually started a non-profit organization out of it (which I still serve at voluntarily). While I do try very hard not be judgmental of people, I tend to be of the thought that you don't have much right to complain unless you're trying to change something.
Of course, I've never had much financially so volunteering gives me a way to give of myself. I typically volunteer in areas related to violence prevention with my own group, Prevent Child Abuse Indiana, Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence and a few others.
In fact, I usually accept my "paid jobs" only after knowing they will give me the freedom to do my volunteer work.

Most of my volunteering lately is done to raise funds for Hospice of Michigan. This includes recording a few CDs with my friends that are available by donation with proceeds going to benefit Hospice. I also help to raise funds for other organizations such as Coats for Kids, Toys for Tots, etc. by selling raffle tickets. I will be spending a weekend as a volunteer at the Nor-East'r Music & Art Festival. I have previously spent many years volunteering at our local preschool. I have volunteered as a tutor at the elementary school. The senior citizen center was another place I volunteered. I have often taken animals into my home and nursed them back to health.

I do - I spent several years as a School Governor and Chair of Governors on a local school, and am currently a Trustee with an animal welfare chairty.
I'm also a volunteer admin on a community website, and am involved in setting up a small non-profit 'Think Tank' to attempt to help communities solve their own problems.
I love it - I think that to serve one's community is a high form of service indeed.
If you don't do it, get out there and get volunteering. Every little genuinely helps!
