How do you explain Death to a 6 year old? My son lost a Classmate yesterday.

When I picked up my son from school yesterday, he told me a classmate had passed away. When I opened his backpack, there was a note from the teacher explaining that the details were sketchy but one of the girls had died from "complications of the flu." I was wondering how all of you would explain this to your children. The first thing he wanted to know was if this could happen to him. As a parent this broke my heart, I can't imagine losing a child.

I had the task of explaining the same to my son last fall. We said the litte girl was sick, and God saw how tired she was, so he wanted to make her in angel in hevan where she would never be sick or tired.

That seems to be a good explaination. I want to keep it kind of short, since he is so young and doesn't understand some stuff. I don't want him to go around worry about dying.

I like that explanation too. Yes, keep it simple, but encourage him to ask as many questions as he needs to.
