I'm just wandering which one should our child should learn first, counting or the alphabet? How do you teach your child to count? recite the english alphabet?

I taught 3 year old preschool, 4 year old preschool and kindergarten for many years. We did time with the alphabet and time with numbers each day. No matter what you start with repetition is a key factor. I used songs and visual aids. Little singsong sayings like for the sound of a letter, B say bu as in boy, B say bu bu bu 1 little 2 little 3 little Indians or whatever example you want to use. I suggest a bulletin board that a child can help decorate with letters and numbers....saying each as they put it on the board. Also, don't use to many at a time, as they learn 3 or 4 well, then move on to the next ones By the end of the year, I had my 3 and 4 yr olds reading simple books.

I forgot to say, I also have a method for teaching them how to write. I take the paper, with little ones, use the preschool paper with the wide spaces. I divide these spaces into rooms...upstairs, downstairs basement ______________ upstairs -------------- downstairs ______________ Basement ______________ each letter has its different rooms some live upstairs, some downstairs some upstairs & downstairs some downstairs & basement example...Big or Capital A lives upstairs & downstairs but never goes into the basement little a only lives downstairs

This is great! a very edifying contribution. I'm overwhelmed by the educational instruction that you've given me and eventually this will be helpful also to all the readers that may stumble into this discussion. It is by repetition that we are learning. I think I just need a little patient and combine with this newly found wisdom of yours and other responder I am sure everything would be OK with me and my son. .. thanks much..

It will be fine and if you need added help, I will be happy to mail out supplies and things with instructions of what I did. It was all very effective.

As far as I am concerned, psychologists advise to teach children the ABC and to count simaltaneously. Well, I've got no experience in that, my kid is too little, but I saw my sister-in-law, who is a teacher by profession, how she taught my niece the Russian alphabet and also figures. There should be some good books about that I guess.

You must teach the alphabets first, the numbers are easy to grasp, specially if you teach the first ten numbes the rest is quite easy o follow

Of course every child is different in learning. My daughter learned her shapes and colors first. When it came to numbers and letter, I tried to teach them at the same time. However she picked up on her numbers quicker, she has always been able to recognize them easier. She knows how to write them better as well. It is a tought decision. Just go with what they naturally take too. It is also easier to add numbers to a conversation. You can always count something easier than you can spell something. Have fun! mommy of Layla-baby and Shaan-bubba http://lassdev4.team2succeed.com http://just4fun.moms4netprofit.com

I think we should develop first of all an aptitude of child by sounds & figures that would attract him. Its good to make him or her familiar with daily life things having the toys model. The shapes of numbers are so easy in a way that languages may be different but numbers are almost same globally.

Exactly. I agree that educational toys in form of alphabet and number helps all our kid to be familiar with the alphabet and numerals, this way he can easily remember and start to relate the numbers or alphabet with regards to the things around him. thanks and have a nice day.
