Are you a DIY person or do you usually hire someone?

For jobs that you could probably learn to do yourself, like putting down carpet or moldings, do you hire someone or do you figure you can handle it?
I like to learn how to do stuff myself, but my husband usually wants to hire someone. He has no confidence in my DIY skills. Lol.

I may have answered a similar post from you awhile back? I've been in the trades as a contractor for more than 45 years, and I'm also a DIY around my own home, Unless it happens to be something that might better be taken care of by someone with a license, bonding, and insurance, And complies with any laws or code regulations.
The issue is a bit more than just enjoying being a DIY, and certainly I encourage that with research, education, and skills development. What often happens in a homeowners attempt to "save" money is that they have to end up calling in an appropriate contractor to adjust their errors. So in effect that homeowner is paying twice; not only for the proper service, but in any efforts, energies, time, and money spent initially.
The desire to learn beyond what we think we are capable of is more than valid, but consideration should be involved in this process. "I Think I can" and "I know I can" might be vastly different in a process and eventual effect.

I would enjoy seeing this as a category here, much like it is on yahoo Q & A.

For most things, I do it myself. Of course, if it something that should be done by a licensed pro, like a rewiring job, I will hire someone. For the easy and intermediate jobs like interior trim, painting, changing light fixtures, etc, I feel very capable of most tasks.

I usualy try to do everything my self. I cant stand to pay people all that money. I fiure every tim I do it my self I am basicaly making what I would be paying them which is a lot more than I make.
There are defiantely times we have to call people in because I dont have the knowledge to do things safely or correct. If itis something I can look up online and know how to do I would do it.

my husband is very good with his hands and worked in maintenance & such for many years. So whatever needs to be done, he does it and it costs us next to nothing. Just materials.
