Is myth something society needs?

Well, if you read Joseph Campbell, he certainly alludes to the fact that "myth" may be one of the cornerstones of the human experience.
On some level, perhaps we NEED "heroes" in order to find a purpose for being here. On some level, I believe we all go through versions of "The Hero's Journey," anytime we are trying to overcome obstacles to reach some goal.
I think modern-day mythology exists and manifests in many ways... both on a "family" level, and on a "societal" level. I think it may be our mythology that causes us to strive for more than the metaphorical equivalent of being "cows, standing in a field, chewing the cud."

Wow! I do think we need mythology and heros to help us gravitate toward doing the right things. I watch the show HEROS and to me it is some seriously great modern day mythology. I think too often we give into playing petty and childish games. Focusing on something other than ourselves and our own personal problems helps. Maybe mythology helps us step outside ourselves and in doing so, we may find the answers we were looking for.
