DVD players in vehicles

I recently finished a LONG road trip with two children (2 years and 7 months). My sister lent me her travel size DVD player so my son could watch movies. It was so wonderful that I'll probably buy my own. There were no complaints. They both either slept or watched "The Wiggles" or "Baby Einstein". And one of the big advantages was that I could barely hear it. Can anyone think of any disadvantages?

I do have to agree...I think it is great for children, especially on long car rides, and it's great for the parents because the children are kept occupied and not bored and the parents won't have to listen to them whining about how they're bored. As far as a disadvantage, I think they can be distracting. Not so much to the driver, but to drivers in other cars. When I see one sometimes I try to tell what movie is playing, which probably isn't the best thing to do when I'm driving! I also hate it how some people use it for their children for a 5 minute car ride to the store. That's annoying.

I agree about the time thing. All of my family live over an hour away (in the case of the sister I visited on this recent road trip over 17 hours away) so I probably will buy a DVD player. However, it will be reserved for the long trips or it wouldn't be a treat.

I don't have one in my vehicle, but would love to have one for my kids, say for emergencies, especially if there was a traffic jam that lasted for hours, or long road trips. Though with the road trips the kids would miss out with being able to watch some of the beautiful scenery go by if they are watching the DVD...

My child is still 2 1/2 years old...so I see the DVD player has more advantages than disadvantages. If it is a long road trip, I will certainly welcome this. I am planning to get one because we are planning to take a vacation to my native country and that is 16 hours flight and I don't think my daughter will be quite happy if she doesn't have anything to entertain her. Now that I don't have the DVD player yet, she just have a little CD player to listen to music. We visit my inlaws in Fl and we are in Tx so that is quite a drive. Now if my child is older then definitely spending quality time talking while driving and sharing stories definitely is a plus without a DVD player.

As a kid I took many long road trips with either my mother or with my grandmother. Most years there were 2 or 3 trips, as my grandmother owned a vacation home in Florida (we lived in Massachusetts). One of the best parts of the trips for me, was listening to the stories my grandmother told while driving. I can see how for the adult that might get tiring after awhile though. If I did carry a DVD player for long trips, I would limited it's use just as I limit how much TV my son can watch at home.
