Why do men get bald when they are old???

i don't know if you have noticed but us men after the age of 50 we start to look in the mirror and hope that the hair that falls of from our head will soon stop..but after a few years yes it will stop, because there isn't anything to fall of.Can anyone please tell me why, i mean is it genetic or we can cure it before it starts?????????
