ready made mixes

Ive seen alot of recipes that call for some mix (bisquit mix, pancake mix, etc). I remember using some of these when i was a kid (my baking/cooking skills werent too good back then). But now, i just cant get myself to try any of that. Id rather be in charge of what goes in the mix myself. So my questions to all you guys are: - Do you use these yourself? - Which ones do you use? - Why do you use them? Are they better than home-made?

I like to make everything from scratch. Once in a blue moon, I will use a mix, but it is never as tasty as homemade. I have used Duncan Hine and all the pancake brands. They are fine. Nothing special. But, I always tend to add to them too.

I too use to use those ready made mixes when my children were young (and so was I). Now I am concerned about what exactly is in the food that we eat and choose to make from scratch instead. There are times when a recipe will call for some type of ready made mix like bisquick but I've found recipes online for copy cat mixes and just adjust the amount so that I have the required amount for that recipe. I don't even keep any homemade mixes around. I prefer to make them up fresh as I need them since there is still additional ingredients and mixing up to be done to use the homemade mix so I just do the whole thing from scratch. I find homemade to be a much better quality than any prepackaged product.

I keep jiffy mixes on hand for when I am at a loss for time. The pizza dough mix is especially good because while it is sitting, i can prep the ingredients (grate the cheese, slice the veggies, etc) and preheat the oven -- then the pizza takes about 15 minutes, start to finish. I also love the cornbread mix because i use it to batter fried foods like fried pickles or onion rings. But when I have the time I make it from scratch because it costs less and isn't really complicated. I almost never use a pancake mix because I have a better recipe for fluffy pancakes than any mix could ever make. And most boxed mixes are never BETTER than homemade, they are just quicker or easier (i've found).

WHen we cook we never use ready made. THe reason being is that we are making a mess anyway so what the hay. When we have time to make a meal we like to do so from scratch so we can spent time together cooking
