white or black

I just finished watching the good the bad and the ugly (old western) and it made me ask myself why is it the good guy is supposed to be in white. Police, fire, EMS are all in either dark blue or balck and they are the best you can find.

I believe it is based off a couple of ideas. One is that white represents light and black represents darkness, the light brings you joy and makes you happy and thus is good. The dark is scary and makes you sad and thus is bad. In old western is was easier to tell who was good and who was bad because you only had black and white movies and TV. I for one prefer the ying/yang theory of an even balance between the two. White represent male and black the female and together they bring an even harmony to the world.
