Your Pets Reaction During your Newborns Homecoming

Well we don't have any babies in our home yet but I'm curious to know how your pet reacted when you brought home your baby for the first time. I've heard of some pretty severe cases of kitties peeing in the crib, while some people experience no issues between the pet and baby. What were your experiences between your pet and baby? Maybe you don't have kids yet, but have any of your family members/friends had an experience? Share the story with us.

My dog, a black lab, had absolutely no problem with any of my 3 kids as newborns. In fact, she laid right by the crib, as if to protect them. The cats of course were extremely curious, but if the baby moved, they ran like the wind. I had one cat that as soon as you took the baby out of the crib, she would go to sleep in it, but when you came back into the room with the baby, she would leave. All in all, we were lucky and didn't have any issues between our pets and our newborns!

We have a 7 year old mixed breed dog...We got her right before the birth of my 4th son, she didn't even notice when we brought him home....she was still a pup though...but with my daughter, it was kind of funny...she wouldn't let anyone but me touch the baby without raising all kinds of a fuss!! I really thought she was going to rip my husbands leg off or something. She is VERY protective of babies! Well, of all children, and she doesn't like men very much anyways...She's such a good girl! I don't know what I'd do without her...she's our protector! Well, mine and the kids, not hubby's, lol....Great discussion! :-)

When I brought my son home my dog that had been with me for 3 years just sniffed him and walked away. He always slept under his crib and was very protective of him. One day many weeks later my dog snapped at my son and I had to make the decision to give my dog back to the original owners. It really worked out well for both of us. I love my dog so much and the people who gave him to me had her Mother. The Mother got killed a few months before and the owners were devastated. I told them what had happened with my son and they begged me for the dog, so I gave him to them but I could go see him anytime I wanted.

Have a dog from 12 years, the son is by now he. I cannot have children, and I cannot answer, but my dog is jealous of my grandsons, he was agreeing the first, children have arrived later, the king is he, is to be understood.

My sister and I live together and when we brought home my niece the dog we had at the time was funny. He was a shih-tzu and he watches us put her in the bassinet and he tried to look up in there. He finally jumped up onto the bed to take a look. Well that was it. He laid down right there and didn't move until my niece woke up. He was with her all the time. No one could get near her unless we said it was ok. He was very protective of her. Of course as she got older they were inseperable. She would try to share her bottle with him :) and he was very tolerate as she pulled and poked at him. He was great with her.

Some pets do get jealous when your newborn comes home. They get jealous of the attention they used to have when there was no baby. I suggest that if your planning on having a baby, you might want to train your pet on sleeping outside before the baby comes. Newborns can get an allergy from animal fur so be careful. But then again, some pets really don't have issues. Personally, my dog got a bit jealous of my newborn. When my baby cries, he will whine as well, but that's all.

Before we brought our baby home from the hospital, my husband brought some clothes she wore and let our miniature daschund Hercules sniff it. Then the following day when we came home..he gave her a good sniffing and he has been so good to her. Now my baby is 2 1/2...i would pity Hercules because she loves to tease or play with him and he let her do everything to him without snapping.

WHen my kids were born we had a beagle. Laika was very interested in the babies, but in a gentle curious way, and as they grew she kept being very gentle with them. She would lay down by the crib sometimes, and she had this habit of going to get me if they woke up :) I also did a lot of stories when things didn't go that well. I guess it depends on the animal and more than that if the animal feels neglected because of the baby.

All my animals were fine with my daughter when we brought her home from the hospital. My Lab, god bless his kind soul, pestered me relentlessly until I lay her down on the couch so he could give her a good sniffing over along with a kiss. My one cat, Lightning who is pictured, is awesome with babies and was her protector from day 1. He's the one that let me know whenever she woke up cause he would lay under her crib while she was sleeping or right up against her if she was sleeping on the couch and would come get me when she woke up. Whenever she cried, both animals would instantly be by her cuddling up to her and kissing the tears away. To this day, she is 8 now, Lightning will sleep next to her in bed and comfort her thru her nightmares when she has them.

I don't have a baby either, but when my new nephew was born in Dec. 2005, my brother brought him to the house a month later, and all my miniature pinscher did was sniff him like crazy. She knew that he was a new addition to the family; Dogs can sense when change is coming. My sister-in-law would wobble around our house and my dog always noticed her belly. My nephew is a year and some change now, and he loves my dog, and my dog loves him. I know it sounds saccharine, but they simply can't get enough of each other! The only time she gets jealous is when my brother pays too much attention to his son and not her lol. But other than that, she has/had no problem with him whatsoever. Like I said, it's more love than anything else.

my sheltie was very protective when i was pregnant with my baby... he usually sleeps outside my parents' room door... but as soon as i was pregnant, he started sleeping outside my room door instead... when my baby came home, he was very protective over her... he would sleep where she is... never too far from her...
