buy a new computer (a complete one) every time or just buy part after part?

I bought my computer about ten years ago and since than I've never bought myself a whole computer, but part after part. First the motherboard and the processor and so on and so on.The positive things here are that you don't have to spent a lot of money at once. And if you buy the whole thing at once everything gets old sooner or later, but on the other hand if you buy parts like me you can stay in touch with the development and have a pretty up-todate computer and you can learn a lot more if you do it yourself.
What do you think about it? Do you know how to put together parts of the computer or do you go to the nearest computer shop and let them do it for you and pay?

i think it is a great idea
i too had a computer for about 10 years and once in a while i changed his parts and everything was great
i decided to change it 3 weeks ago when i noticed that there are things i want to change but couldn't because he was too old (pentium 2)
so i went to the computer store and bought the parts that i wanted separetly..because most of the build in computers have many parts with weird names that are made in china and i knew that i want only the best brand. so i bought parts of westren, kingston and asus and my friend that is dealing with computers hoocked them all together.
i am very pleased:)

My first computer where I could get on line was a gift from my brother. He built it for us. Otherwise we wouldn't have had one at the time. That was back in 2000. Almost 2 years ago I got a brand new one and yes we bought the whole thing at once. They have come down so much in price I can't see doing it piece meal unless it's something minor that has gone wrong with it.

I never buy new computers. I have had this one for almost 15 years and I have it upgraded every time something new comes on the market. I agree with you that it is much less expensive to do this. However, I don't know much about computers so my hubby who is a computer engineer takes care of it for me.
