How does the rating system work here?

Do you want to have a low number or a high number? How do the numbers affect you? And why are their so many so proud to be mylot's gestapo of ratings? Shouldn't we just do away with the number system? Afterall, there's still plenty of empty of content conversations going on, but now if you say something someone doesn't like they can go along and bash you at every opportunity. Just doesn't make sense to give that much power to so many people with complexes...
