Do you TALK to ANTS?

What is the first reaction in your mind when you see 1, 2 or an army of ants marching in front of your eyes?
Do you squash them straight away? Try to blow them off? Flood them with water? Or... do you try talking to them?
I once heard from a monk that ants are able to understand the things we say. Instead of killing them so very cruelly, he suggested that we first try to persuade them to "move house". I did make a few experiments and put on my diplomat's hat. Half the time it worked; half the time it didn't. :P
How about you, have you ever tried to communicate with ants? Would you want to give it a try now that I've told you about this possibility?
Do share your usual reactions to ants, and if this discussion will change your mind in any way. ;-)

I always admired their sense of comradery and teamwork and often hoped that human beings were more harmonioujs. They all seemed to know what their duties were and just 'got on with it'lol. I don't like to kill any little ceature if i can helpit, even wasps. I love to observe them.I like the idea of talking to them..I always find myself talking to other little creatures.

Wasps! Why must you mention wasps? That's one of the discussion topics I have already written down to start. I haven't posted it yet because I am not sure if people will be put off by me churning out 10 discussions a day - I certainly can, and easily! :P
PS.: Ants are controlled by their queen ant. So in this sense, there is only one person - all the other ants are part of that person.. so we can't talk about harmony unless we think the cells in our body have a great sense of comradeship too (which is also true lol).

You really tried it?! Hmm, maybe I should too. There is a colony of them in my restroom (of all places) and most often they are on the mouthwash..I have no idea why that attracts them, but for whatever reason, I would like them out of there. I've almost always instinctively drowned them in the basin..hehe (Evil me!) Maybe just maybe I'll try talking to them, but what do I say to them..plead or order?! lol Oh wiz, you always get my brains working, in some cranky way or the other!

Yes I did.
What I normally say is something like this:
Hey buddy, you know what? I would suggest you move house real quick... because the next time I see you, I am gonna KILL you. So, move house alright? I really don't wanna hurt you. PLEASE, okay?

when i was a kid i agree i used to squash them, but now not really, i try to blow them off or sometimes even flood them with water, however i take care that they dont die, if they are just one or two ants i place them gently on a wall or drier place. well i dont talk to ants.

Um.. you mean ants can swim? *incredulous*
If you flood them with water, how do you make sure they still live? Do you have a factory making nano lifeboats for them? :P

COMMON i mean to say i place one or two ants on a drier place, not the whole lot, if there are a lot of ants at that time i have to get rid of them.

Ants can definitely swim. Place a ..number of ants on vessel full of water.I am sure they would not get drowned.

Umm, nope, I don't talk to the ants. Here we have huge flying ants. I don't talk to them because I don't stop long enough to do so...they scare the crap out of me. When I see one, I just try to run faster than they can fly..lol..

I like to sit there on my step and watch the streams of ants walking or more like marching across the walkway. It always amazes me. I dont talk to them out loud but I am encouraging them inside. Way to go little guy. But alas, if they turn on me and come in my house, the ant traps come out. Bye, Bye ants.

People think I'm dippy enough talking, to my dogs, a lizard and a squirrel if I started talking to ants they'd have me in a nut house for sure.

I don't really talk to ANTS. But I do watch them especially if I saw them marching in one line. SOmetimes I play with them and screw them up. In the middle and in the front of the line, sometimes, I put a killer chalk and see what happens to them. They all be screwed up, going to different ways. But they have no way out! Because I'm surrounding them the killer chalk. Haha! Well, I hate them especially if they bite me. It's so itchy. But yeah, I appreciate their colony though. Well, if it's really true that they can somehow understand that we say, I might as well try talking to them. I'll get back to this post once I've tried doing it. lol :)

A really great new observation from your end.I have always watched with utmost curiosity the band of ants marching ahead in disciplined motion.I have even felt that they are able to communicate with each other. They are ingenious in getting over difficulties. They have a social life of their own.But how come humans can have a rapport with them? Surely I will make it a try when they are around.

ohh I havent thought of that! But i remember my childhood days back inmy country, some rumor was spreading about eating ants. That it makes you SMART!!! i dunno why they said that?! maybe they're linking it to sweets. That sweets/chocolates stimulates the brain. and ants like sweets! hahaha, oh dear!

while i was a kid, around 6yrs, i used to chat with them.. tell stories to them when am bored and when nobody is there in the houses. Sometimes if they dont listen to me, i even used to punish them.. hehe, thats just crazy, but oh, well its when i was a kid. I dont really think that humans can communicate with ants, they are a bit younger species, and not even connected to us. Anyway, now i usually blow them off, BUT sometimes, if they bug me while am at my dinner table, or while am resting, it deserves to die.. So at those times i usually KILL them, SMASH them and FLOOD them.. otherwise i leav them to go on with their hard works

Interesting, i don't speak ant's language. And I don't believe ant can hear what we say. They can sense movement, they can sense sugar, they can sense you are disturbing them and thus they are moving away...
Normally i just ignore them, sometimes i will sweep them away, not with intention of killing them, just wanna make them out of my dining table, or living room.
After reading this discussion, nothing will change, i will still sweep them away, and no speaking ant's language.

I never talked to ants but I have a tendency to place little stones, twigs and leaves close to them, just to see whether they go for carrying them. They often do, to my surprise. They seem able to lift and carry things much heavier than themselves. Sometimes, they struggle a little, but they get there by hook or by crook... fascinating creatures.
I never squash ants... I watch them for hours. Having said that, I don't like flying ants as they tend to sting, so they don't last so long when they get in my path. lol.
Brightest Blessings.

Yes, it is true that ants can carry many times their weight. I can't remember the exact number.
Maybe gym rats should study them in more details. :P

Okay almighty and immortal Lordwarwizard, another intriguing discussion. LOL. My wife would kill be seeing this response I'm making. We have a lot of ants in our yard out front along the driveway. I hate killing them as they really help the enviroment. She is constantly buying ant spray etc. Now once I tried a unique approach. Ants love sand/dirt as that's there main building block for HOME. I scraped some sand up from my play sand I have & set a trail along side the path they walked. Amazingly or as guessed they followed the trail snapping up more building material for their neighborhood of contos, single family homes and high rises. So I then set a trail of sand on the other side of my driveway,(love my neighbor haha) & the families all moved & started to build a new city. So that's my story & I'm sticking to it.
HAHAHAHAHAHA!
(if you believe this I got a High Rise Condo unit for sale It was made last year right here in my yard) LOL

I am amazed at how ants maintain their cadence when they march - they have the discipline to stay in line and to wander off..

I think because they are all controlled by the Queen ants. They are quite robotic in that.

When I was younger, I used to find ant hills in the backyard and my sister and I would sprinkle sugar over it. Haha..
But now, whenever I see a line of ants, I find the gap between ant A and and B and rub the invisible line vigorously. Then ant B would have a hey day. It would either turn around or just go off course. :p I don't know why, but I find it hilarious.. because all the rest of the ants seem confused!
But naahh.. I don't talk to them. But I encourage my son to talk to them. lol! I'll tell him to say hello to the ants.
