Rap and Hip Hop Music

Why is it that some people don't consider rap a true musical genre? Why do some people hate it so much? I think I already know the answers to these questions, but I want to hear what others have to say. My views will come out as I respond to everyone else's responses. What is so wrong with rap?

I think in the early days of rap there was more musical content: the rhythm of the words was good, and the words themselves were often clever and witty. But now many rap artists make it up as they go along and use the same old cliches over and over. To me this is what makes rap boring and tedious to listen to. Plus rap seems to have a built-in aggression, and this makes a lot of people switch off.

I think it's an art form.. and certainly a genre of music, with some good, and some not as good, like any other.. There are some songs I like very well.. and I'm in my 50's and a gramma..

I like some rap and hip hop. If I found anything wrong with the rap it would be the lyrics.

The problem I have with rap music is the things that are said, not all rap is bad. I like the beats and the way things flow from their mouths, but like I said it isn't the music itself it is the word. I tend to hear (please excuse my language) alot of shoot the N@&&a, kill the cop, and rape the B@*$h. And I do take offense to that so I chose not to listen to it. However I do enjoy alot of hip hop music.

Every genre has its good and bad - have you ever heard the classical music of Tippet, it's horrendous, yet the 'intelligentia' say he's magnificent (it's like a 2 year old with a stick and biscuit tin). I think Rap and HipHop is the same. I love the early, old school stuff myself (Sugarhill, Melle Mel, Run DMC) but feel that some of the later contributors have great ability, too (Wu Tang, Dre). Unfortunately, when something becomes popular, loads of artists jump on the bandwagon, and the quality can go down. Ultimately, though, if someone likes something, it's worthy to them.
