Saying Grace In A Restaurant
Last week I took my children to a restaurant.
My six-year-old son asked if he could say grace.
As we bowed our heads he said, "God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Mom gets us ice cream for dessert. And Liberty and justice for all! Amen!"
Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, "That's what's wrong with this country. Kids today don't even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!"
Hearing this, my son burst into tears and asked me, "Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?"
As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him,
an elderly gentleman approached the table.
He winked at my son and said, "I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer."
"Really?" my son asked.
"Cross my heart," the man replied.
Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing),
"Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes."
Naturally, I bought my kids ice cream at the end of the meal.
My son stared at his for a moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life.
He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman.
With a big smile he told her, "Here, this is for you. Ice cream is good for the soul sometimes; and my soul
is good already."

That is so sweet. I love the way kids think. It reminds of a time when I had my two oldest daughters. One was 2 and the other was 1. We were driving along an unfamiliar road when we came upon a sudden sharp turn. My husband made the turn but in the process the car seat which must not have been tight enough tipped over. We stopped the car and righted the car seat. It had scared our one year old. So our two year old asked if she could pray for her sister. we said sure and this is what she said. "Lord bless this food." It was the only prayer she knew but I'm sure the Lord understood perfectly what was in her heart.

Now that is something i'd never think a kid would do... I mean since i was a kid everyone would either be mad because their parents did not get them what they wanted or something else... Seriously i think you raised that kid pretty well :)
OTher than that, that old guy seemed pretty nice... I wish there was more people in the world like him

Oh that is so cute . You must have been proud to see your son do this . I would have seen the look on the woman's face when he did this as she must have been in shock lol .
What was she thinking in making comments about a six year old little boy who took the time to say Grace , I mean really he was six and did a really good job . Ice cream to a child is a big thing

Weemam, my soul cries out to the Lord and I bless your child for he is truly a delight and a joy to me. And he surely turned that woman's sourness into joyfulness. And God gets all the glory. What the devil meant for bad God turned it into good!

A truly heart-warming story and I know exactly what you mean, thanks for sharing my friend. When I worked with children I marvelled at their innocence, they don't hold back like adults do, they just say what's on their minds! It's a shame they have to grow up!

This is a very sweet story and we should learn something from it. We should be like children in our prayers. and faith..full of sincerity and truly believe in things that God can do for us. As adults, we are already jaded and we thought we know the best for us and not God decide for us. Thanks for sharing this.

Oh, that was real sweet; I like that. He was just being honest with God; if he can't be honest with the Almighty, who's he gonna be honest with?

Oh my, you just brought a tear in my eyes after reading your story. Your story is like some stories I read in "Chicken Soup for the Soul" book. I don't know eversince I became a mom, I easily get emotional specially when there are kids involved. I pity that woman who gave your son a spite remark about his prayer.Clearly she doesn't have Christ in her life. And I admire your son's wonderful heart that inspite of what was done to him, he still has the heart to give her peace. I loved your story. Thanks for sharing this to us here at Mylot.

That is wonderful. And so adorable too. Good for him, I hope that lady was totally humiliated. You know, I think that THAT is what is wrong with society today. People who look down on and treat other people badly for the little things that may not be perfect. Then they release the rapist or murderer because of some dumb, so called injustice. Yeah for your son. And tell him I liked his prayer very much.
P.S. My son says grace every night when we sit down to dinner. He says, "Dear God, thank you for letting me have a good day and giving us food to eat." Then we say amen and my 1 1/2 year old daughter claps. This is every night.

Hi Weemam. I can understand why this story would appeal to you, as it did to me, because I believe that prayer is talking to God about what is in your heart and soul. not just a rote mumbling of words, but those are handy if all else fails in you time of need,Thank you for passing this lovely story along to brighten out day
Regards Robin

That is absolutely precious and I just have to pass it on. I wish I knew who wrote it. You really should put a note at the top of it in the future so people don't think it's about your son just in case the actual writer sees it.
But thank you so much for sharing this.

I'm not sure how my post wound up under someone else's comment but I really loved this. I do think you should preface it with a statement that it was written by someone else.
I loved this especially because I write children's stories and I love hearing stories about children.
