Babies Beware Airbags

Small children travelling in the front of seats of cars which are fitted with airbags could be fatally injured by the bag's sudden inflation in the event of accident. US figures show a worrying rise in deaths of children in otherwise minor collisions, with adult seat belts failing to protect them. Babies placed in rear-facing child seats are also at risk. Although manufacturers are working on "smartairbags" that take account of the size of the passenger, children should travel in the backs of cars until these become standard issue.
