Im talking about the "send $10 to next person on the email list" scam. I know its a scam, but if we got all real honest people and everyone actually paid their dues, can it really work? Any mathematicians who have actually looked into this and done the math to make sure it works? I was wondering if maybe I can start a group with just FRIENDS and make it work... Im waiting for others opinions. Also, has anyone really done it?

SCAM!!! This is one of those things that I would NEVER do. While it seems that you have the potential to get (not make) a lot of money, people just seem to forget the old adage: "If it seems to good to be true, then it probably is!" You were waiting for the mathematicians...and I am a mathematician. To calculate the potential here, you would need to know how many people are in each layer of the "tree", and how many layers would potentially send you money. That said, I can't calculate the answer. In reality, what you probably need is a statistician --someone who could give you the odds in favor of everyone actually following the rules and participating properly!

Thanks for your post. So you have done the math and you say its not possible to make alot of money? What Im asking is "in a perfect world scenario, where all people were honest, could this work?" Let me know. Thanks.

I got a snail mail letter the other day asking me to send a dollar to 6 people on this list and then cross off the first person (i think it was the first) and that I will receive lots of money in return. I almost was going to do it but thought against it because like you say who knows if they are all honest people. I think it could work but HONESTY is the key word here.

I just want to know if mathematically it will work as well. I think they confuse you with all the "send to the first and then you move up and then the next person sends to the next and so on and so on". I dont have time to figure it all out. So I was wondering if all people were honest could it work.

In a perfect world, it would be nice to be on the receiving end. :) I have tried a few that are similar to this and did actually get a few payments before interest in the sites went down, but barely enough to get back what I put in. They are, however, better than randomizers, because your name stays on the list for every email you send out. For a better result you need to have a lot of people to send to because most people don't want to get involved with them. But, in a perfect world, send a million emails & they all decide to do it & you'd be rich!
