What is the proper way to address a French woman whose marital status is unknown

Don't address them as either untill you find out. I don't know if that would be fine with the French, but here in the US we can get away with it.

If youre unsure of her marital status, say, "madamoiselle". I love that word. Otherwise, address her with Madame. Very feminine and elegant in the sense of hearing.

Its probably better to err on the side of Mademoiselle and let her correct you if she is married, than to call her Madame and her not being married. I think its would be a compliment to call somebody Mlle than Madame. Dont you?
