I really love spelling tests! Not that I am a perfectionist but I'm really particular about spelling Since I find it so important. But sad to say a lot of people don't know how to spell.. I've noticed this because during spelling tests the scores are low. And another thing is people don't care about spelling anymore because of text messaging since we're after of making the message long. This has affected our ability to spell correctly.

Hi there, I never had any problem with people when it comes to wrong spelling, as long as I can understand what they're trying to say, I never really try to make a big deal of it. The thing that just bothers me sometimes is the grammatical construction of their sentences, as you will encounter some posts which are composed of phrases that really don't fit together even though they are almost perfect in spelling, it could really be hard to make any sense of it.
Don't get me wrong, I didn't say that I don't like these people who are trying to learn and communicate, my point is just that proper GRAMMAR & SPELLING can really help one to express him/herself better so that it could ignite the responsive quality from people and we'll all be benefiting from that.
I've always had been critical with my own spelling. When I'm responding to a certain discussion and an obscure word runs across my mind, I always try to check what it means and it's proper spelling in my e-Dictionary so I won't be making vague comments. But sending text messages through cellular phones is a rather different story for me as I usually send long "txts" to my friends and that means that I'm more susceptible to the temptations of abbreviating and/or 'shortening of words'.

Sometimes I'm confused with the responses here because of grammar and spelling so spelling words correctly and correct grammar would really express what you really like to relay.

I used to check other people's work when I was in highschool since I was an editor in our school paper. And to be honest, I AM particular with spelling coz it's a shame if you don't get your spelling right. But there are just times when y ou can't help getting your words mispelled. One good example, like you said, text messaging. And dear cuz, you know pretty well that I do mispell my words for the sake of keeping it short. So I guess it depends. But just make sure that writing in short form doesn't affect your spelling.

Spelling is really important. We're not perfect so we mispell some words. Yah there's always an exception.. chat and text messaging.

Yes, I am very particular with spelling especially from professional people because we had already earned our diploma. But I don't expect it from somebody who has a poor command on English language because usually it is not their main language.
But then, it is expected from students because they are learning in school. You are right, youngters nowdays are digressing because of text messages and chatting. They wanted to do shortcut with all the words so that they can talk or text faster. Hopefully they can realize that when they go out in the workforce, knowing how to spell is very important.

If you don't like bad spellers then mylot is not the right place for you.
Pretty well half the people on here misspell words.
For many it is a language barrier and I have no problem with that.
You can tell when a person is genuine regardless if their English if perfect or not.
At least they are trying and that is something.

It's a good practice that you should always check your spelling all the time and be keen about it. Just don't expect everybody's good in it especially the foreigner. Philippines have a high literacy rate that's why most Filipinos are very good in it. But Americans just write as how they say it. They're not too conscious about it.
I have a niece who's in grade 1 now. She's good in her spelling. Her being inquisitiveness make her good in it. She also send text messages, but when we reply, all words should be in correct spelling so as not to confuse her. It's a bad habit since she's still developing.

I've always been a poor speller. I think it would be easier here on MyLot of the had a built in spel checker. But once I hit 500 I can start typing my responses in Word, speel check them then paste them into MyLot. Hopefully that will help...

brilliant idea! hehe I wish mylot has a built in spell checker. Cause sometimes I'm not sure of the spelling of a word and I have to use my dictionary.

First and foremost i do. But, soory to inform you that if you are looking at mylot and speeling correctness forget it.
some times its due to language bar , spmetime due to huried typing sometime some more reasons for faulty spellings so dont get disheartened, there are some people who still have high regards for correctness.

I didn't say anything about mylot users who mispell words but I'm talking in general. I know we shorten the words because we're in a hurry when replying to emails and in text messaging.

Since I was in the preschool, I was always a part of the spelling contests. I have been always particular about my spelling for I would have very good first impressions. I am not really a perfectionist about it but I require myself to spell correctly for I want to be used to it.
As for the spell checker, Mozilla Firefox, a better browser than Internet Explorer, have a built in spell checker. You can check if your spelling is right in every website you'll go to. :)
