I am an optician. Do not buy over the counter ones. Get your eyes checked, and speak to the optomotrist about the situation. I do not know what your rx is, so I cannot give further advise. If you are over 40, and your arm is getting to short from holding out things to read, you may need reading glasses. If you have no astigmatism, then over the counter reading glasses will work, providing both eyes are the same rv. So, see what the doctor says. 5 years is due for a change honey. Good luck.

Mine, without insurance (which I have thankfully) usually cost around $150.00. Last year, since my prescription hadn't really changed, and the insurance only pays for glasses every 2 years, I ended up getting prescription sunglasses, and those were about $190.00. I think it depends on what kind of frame you want, and what type of prescription lenses you have to have.

oh i am with you on this one. My boyfriend just needed to get new glasses and contacts. With his frames, lenes, 2 boxes of contacts (a 6 months supply) and his exam, we paid almost 350.00. yes it may sound like alot but i think it was not so bad. i mean it is alot of money to dish out at one time, but he needs his eye sight to work since he drives truck.

I wear contacts right now which dont get much cheaper than $25 per box, but there is usually a minimum of 8 boxes that you have to buy so that puts you at $200. Glasses however are much cheaper. I got mine on sale at ForEyes and am very happy with them. They are designer glasses buy were taken down about $40 or $50 so they were only about I think... $40-$60. I would however recommend that you go see an eyedoctor before getting any of these because your perscription may have changed since the last time and also, if you are thinking of getting contacts, you need a seperate perscription for those. I know, it's a pretty expensive hassle just to be able to see straight. Good Luck!

I just turned 45 and I guess things are going down hill. I now need glasses for the 1st time in my life. $335 it cost me but my company plan covered a little more then 1/2 that cost. Can you get them on a payment plan?

I think it was about 10 years ago that I got my last pair of glasses. I remember them being $150 (I'm in California).
I'm looking into getting glasses now, and I'm scared about what they'll cost (which is actually why I found your thread, as I was thinking about starting one like it).

I'm in the same position hun, and the cost of new glasses is little short of extortionate. The cheapest I could buy for my eyesight is around £155, way out of my price league I'm afraid. I will just have to cope with my old ones for now, but I did think about having new lenses fitted into my old frames to save money

It depends in which country you reside. In India, normally one has to pay Rs. 700/= for a quality frame with glasses. My glasses costed me Rs. 1000/=. But don't see the cost. Go for a quality one. Otherwise your eyes will get afected.
