Do you have any problem in learning grammars?

My wife, our three-year old daughter and I visited a friend who had just given birth to a baby. When the infant cried, our friend asked Carrie, our daughter if she'd like to come to the nursery and helped. Carrie happily followed upstairs. Soon, the cry stopped. A moment later the infant cried again, this time louder. Carrie appeared at the stairs and saying joyfully, "Daddy, Daddy, I helded the baby!"
Being an English teacher and care about the grammar, I replied, "That is good, Carrie. But what is the past tense of hold?" She then looked down and said softly, "Dropped?"

Apart from the story, I'm thinking about how to teach grammars to persons who come with disabilities either blind or deaf or even both like Hellen Keller. How was it like before Braille, Sign Language or technology devices were invented? Anybody wants to share an opinion?
