Well, it takes time to get an adult parrot to trust you. You may want to try feeding a treat every so often by hand to have him/her get use to you. Once you have the trust, then you can begin training.. I have had a relationship with my Sun "Malibu" since he/she was 3 weeks old. So, it's been easier for me to develop trust.
Best of Luck, and keep me posted...

He's right. Many parrots bond to one gender or even to one person. It can take a while to get them comfortable with a new person. One of my cockatiels was 3 years old when we got him. It took almost three months before he really started to like my wife and I. Now he talks all the time and will follow me all over the house. He even wants to sleep under our bed at night.

My sister had a pair of mated finches. They were very cute and I had a friend who owned a gigantic cage with over 12 finches in it. That was something to see. For me I've never owned any birds.

Finches are cute, but they are not the choice bird for me. Cause I like to be able to hold my bird and train it. Finches are too "skittish" for me. But, when they are whitling it's cool to listen to..
Best of Luck with you new members of your family.

I currently have a pair of Breeding Shaft-tail finches, they are a joy to watch in their long flight cage, while the male sings its coutship song while bobbing its head and dance for the female.
I also have parakeets (budgerigars), always love the sounds they make every morning, especially the warbling song of the male courting the female.

I have a sun conure named Boo Boo. Have you gotten yours to talk yet? Boo Boo is less than a year old. I can only get him to mock a whistle when i am not in the room. I also have a double yellow headed amazon parrot that talks. Well, my fiance has that bird, it don't like me. I can't get mine to talk.

I don't currently have any birds. But several years ago I owned 2 Cockatiels. They were my first experience with birds. My mother in law gave them to us as she was allergic to them. They were already grown and had been trained a little. But we worked with them a lot and they were so fun to watch and to spend time with. Their names were Bill & Barbara. Bill was a common grey cockatiel, and Barbara was almost solid yellow with some white. She was a beauty. They loved each other, and Bill could whistle so loud and pretty, he'd say "pretty girl Barbara" and "I love you Barbara". So sweet. They laid a box full of eggs once with no results. Then later they hatched out 3 babies but they didn't make it. My son later developed allergies and asthma so we had to give them to another friend. But we missed them terribly. Birds are a lot of work and responsibility, but oh so much fun. Very rewarding.
