My cat brought in another *gift* for us

So my cat just brought in another live baby rat. After an inital bout of screaming I had to capture it and throw it out since Im alone at home. It had the creepiest eyes but I cant kill them so just pushed it in with a broom into a bucket and threw it out onto the street. Im not sure if Im supposed to shout at her because of this because she thinks shes giving me a gift. The problem is its always a live gift. A couple of weeks back it was the hugest cockroach I have ever seen. Luckily my boyfriend was home that day so he dealt with the cockroach. So what *gifts* has your cat brought in and how do you deal with it? Is there any way to stop it? Or are we supposed to give them a pat on the back for being so generous?

I know it can be creepy sometimes....but she is just doing what comes natural. My cat used to kill mice and bring them to us.Scolding her won't do any good.....she would not understand why you are upset with her.I really don't know of any effective way to teach her not to do this anymore.I always thought of it to be one of the side effects of having a cat and a very small price to pay for having them around.

Thats true it definitely is a very small price to pay and I dont have the heart to scold her because she seems so happy with herself although I really am happy I dont have a weak heart because the sight of her with that squirming mouse in her mouth a little while earlier made me scream louder than I ever have and Im not generally the screaming type.

Congratulations. By the bout of screaming, you made a fuss over her gift to you, which made her think you were in fact really excited (which you were but not in a good way) over her gift. She does not know that your excitement was not a good thing. Yelling at a cat does not do much good, and probably would not help to stop the behavior you are wanting to discourage. Having had lots of hunting cats, I know how old it can get to be brought these gifts.. Here are some suggestions that might cause at least a reduction in the gift department. Live gifts are not all that uncommon, as this is a toy to be played with, and you certainly did your share of playing.. one of my cats used to bring me live chickens.. 1. Don't let her in until you have seen that she carries nothing in her mouth. 2. Learn to think in pictures and keep thinking picture messages of leaving any future gifts outside the door. (animals think in pictures not in words.) 3. When she comes home without a gift make a very big deal over her coming home... Hopefully her hunting days will wane with age. Keep in mind if you only have one hunter, you are still better off.. I had 15 once upon a time, and they brought home the neighbors chickens, rats, mice, tails of things I dare not think were rats just from the size of them... I think the snakes were the worst for me.. but eventually, with enough thought communication they quit bringing them into the kitchen.

LOL. I think your right about the screaming because she brought in another one the next day!! Thanks for the suggestions. I will try it out. I cant imagine how you managed with 15 cats. This little madam of mine is more than I can handle.

Your cat is doing what cats do out of instict. She loves you and is bringing you gifts. If she is an outside cat, she will continue to do this, and there isn't much you can do but love her more, even if she grosses you out.

I know. She brought another one in the next day as well. Unfortunately she only brings in live rats. Atleast they are only babies so its a bit easier to catch them.

You can't shout at her. Cats don't really learn, and aren't interested in being scolded. She is doing what her instincts are telling her to do... but that fact that they are still alive is a little weird. Yes, cats often play with their pray, but usually end up killing them in the end. The only thing I can think if you want to prevent this in the future is to NOT let the cat outside to bring you back these presents. If she is finding them IN the house - be thankful she is catching them.

Yes shes crazy she gets excited because she finds something to play with. I dont think she wants to kill them. Shes still very playful and weve had her since she was a baby so Im not sure if shes developed that killer instinct. She got really upset when I threw the rat out and shes refusing to even look at me at the moment.

lol The way you put it is really so funny-Pat on the back for being so generous:-P Well, they really think they are gifting you something ,don't they ?:-) How cute! Just that they don't know what humans would like. I didn't have a cat ,but a dog and she never brought me anything :-(.I think I am lucky that she didn't ,lol.Well, the only solution is that you let them know the gifts are not wanted by giving him less milk for the day , but that would break their heart. So,I guess you just have to live with it and accept their sincere efforts in bringing those gifts, even if momentarily. We all look forward to more evolved cats as generations pass by.

They think that they are beeing good and that they are like u say - giving u a gift. i am sure that it is a sign of affection =) I just wrote a discussion that I just posted about phobias, where I stated that coahroaches are my biggest fear, if a cat brought that home I woudl die for sure. i am glad that we donĀ“t have them here =)

lol there is no way you can stop this.its the cat nature.unless you keep the cat indoors all the time.my cat bring mice upon the porch an leaves them laying for me to sweep off.but i always look from now on to see if he has anything in his mouth before i let him back in the house.

ughhhhhhhhhh I hate rats, except my plastic halloween rat that squeaks! he is cute, last year he met this girl and lots of orange and black babies. They are all very cute, very plastic and they do not move! I would be screaming if I had a cat and it brought home live presents, eeeeeeewwwwwww make sure it gives the present to you and does not stashing them some where in the house :D

No don't shout at her as this just confuses them. she won't know what is wrong. I haven't had that problem. Mine bring them to the door and they have a particular meow. If I hear that one then I know I have to go and admire their catch. Usually if I tell them they have been a good cat they will take it away and eat it.

Ha ha. With cats, that is so common. They like to bring live things in and play with them until they die of exhaustion, then eat them. Past records have been birds, rats, lizards, roaches etc. Iguanas too.
