Why do we quarrel and get upset ?

Human nature is very versatile,even though we know quarrel leads to nowhere.But we still get upset by our girlfriend,boyfriend and so on and so forth.Actually excessive materialistic outlook of todays world leads to all chaos and disdain.What do you think....are we heading in right direction,is values and prejuduices clash often for it?
