Yes poverty is one of the main cause of crime. In most of the devoloping countries about two third of the population lives below poverty line.On such countries percentage of crime is also very high. However there are other types of killer criminals like serial killer. To avoid crime from poverty various kinds of social benefits needed to start by the government.N.G.O 's have to be more active with their various welfare programes, everyone who have money have to get involved in some charitable works.Small thefts for money instead of punishing them you have to correct them.It can prevent the growth of big criminal. These measures can some percentage prevent crimes.

I think that poverty has a lot to do with crime. Thise who have no money are going to try to get it somehow. I do believe that this could be helped if our goverments would spend some of our money to do something about it. They waste so much of our tax money on things that arent necessary.

i don't think poverty is the main reason at all why crime rate is high. people who steal or kill for money may not necessarily be poor. there are so many ways a person can earn money, some just opt to have it in the easy way they know how... by taking someone else's.
i work with institutions that serve poor communities by providing them the opportunities to make their lives better. in my experience, crime rate amongst these communities are very low if not non-existent.
i would rather blame it on the uneducated judgment of crime doers and society's tolerance to crime. if the big fish wouldn't be caught, how could a small fry like them be able to learn a lesson?
can it be prevented? i believe so. but first the reason why such a crime was done must be identified and analyzed, before making necessary recommendations or relevant conclusions.
