Keeping Confidences

Oh yes, plenty of times in the past. Sometimes it took ages before the truth dawned on me that the secret was spilled by a particular person. So now I don't have secrets and I specifically ask people not to tell me their secrets. I don't want to know and more importantly, I don't want to be put in the position of being accused of divulging a secret when I know I havn't. Prove it!!

If it's the first time, I will test someone with a small secret that doesn't matter if anyone else finds out about, but if they have kept that secret then they have gained my trust, it's slowly, slowly, once you know someone for some considerable time then you realize that they are honest and trustworthy and will hold a secret. I've only had a couple of cases in the past where my secret got out, they get one chance and once chance only, once they have betrayed my trust I never confide in them again!

Yes, I have been with a person like that, a couple persons actually. But one woman in particular. Now when I'm around her I am so cautious about what I say. I know if I have one tiny slip of the tongue, even over something inconsequential, it will be misconstrued and blabbed all over the state.

Yes, I have been with several people who can't keep a secret. Both friends and partners. I did not necessarily like it, so I kept my secrets to myself and did not divulge other information to them at any time. They often asked me why and I would tell them that I couldn't trust them to keep a confidence. Sometimes that ended the friendship and sometimes it didn't. Most people know they can't keep a secret and are honest about it. I appreciate that so I don't waste my time wondering about it!

I am very careful what I tell people, and I have to admit I test them first, telling them at least two "secrets" that I do not really mind if everyone knows. If they keep them, I hope that they will keep others and I tend to gradually confide in them more often. People who can not keep a secret can be very very dangerous, but if you know they can not keep a secret and do not tell them any, then there is no reason to treat them in any way different to other friends. What do you do about secret breakers?
