Why are our American troops wearing the American flag backwards in Iraq?

I've been trying to figure this out for some time
and have not found a legitimate answer. Can anyone
tell me the real reason the stars and bars are being
worn backwards on their uniforms? We've never done this
before, so I wonder why this time.
Don't tell me it's out of respect though. Even the Iraq
citizens who support the troops hold the flag properly.
Maybe someone from the Middle East can clear this up for me.

Excellent discussion, and made me very curious so I went on the hunt for answers and was surprised by what I found. I'm copy/pasting a small portion and providing a link for those that would like to read the whole story.
Here's what I found:
Author and Air Force veteran Dale Brown, who writes novels on military intrigue, believes it’s time to do away with what he calls “these abominations” immediately.
Doing a little research, Brown found that this backwards look is called the “reverse-side flag." As Brown blogs, “If you imagine the soldier wearing the patch on his right shoulder as charging forward, so the soldier is in effect the flagstaff, the flag is ‘fluttering’ in the proper direction.” But, Brown notes, “If it was aligned as normal, the flag would be fluttering the opposite way, which would imply that the soldier is moving backwards, or retreating. Therefore, since a US soldier should never be seen as retreating, the flag should be backwards.”

Here is another link that I thought that you might find interesting it's the does and don't of the American Flag.

Again I want to thank you for an excellent discussion, the hunt for an answer was fun. :)

I've heard that explanation as well. It is absolutely
the wrong logic. I agree with Dale Brown's assessment
that we need to do away with “these abominations”
The president is, though it states;
§10. Modification of rules and customs by President
Any rule or custom pertaining to the display of the
flag of the United States of America, set forth herein,
may be altered, modified, or repealed, or additional
rules with respect thereto may be prescribed, by the
Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces of the United
States, whenever he deems it to be appropriate or
desirable; and any such alteration or additional
rule shall be set forth in a proclamation.
desecrating the flag and all it stands for. I believe
there is a much darker meaning to why this president has
chosen to do this.
Why you ask? Doesn't anyone else think that sometime in
the past a president brighter than this one would have
done the same thing given the same situation?
Of course not. no former president was so stupid as to
have such backward logic. Think of it this way. If that
was the real reason he made this decision, why not carry
the flag attached at the bars to also simulate forward
movement when being carried?

I guess this is some sort of a war sign i believe. Because here in our country, when the flag is backwards, it means there is a war going on.

Interesting that you do that in the Philippines.
It's never been done by the U.S. before though.
It's a mystery to me.

Some of the mylot friends answered your discussion posted the websites which explain why the troops wearing the flag backwards. But I don't get it. Why should wearing it backward means they are brave? If they wear it upside down, then what would that mean?

Nobody has come up with a legitimate reason
for this yet. The reason that was given by
our president is absolutely wrong.
It's very simple. Wearing the flag any way but
the right way is the wrong way. It doesn't matter
what country it is, it's wrong.
Hanging the flag upside down is disgracing the
nation, not only the flag. Allowing the flag to
touch the ground is disrespectful. Wearing it as
clothing is also disrespectful. Allowing the flag
to remain in the rain is disrespectful, unless it
is unavoidable.
There are many other rules and regulations that
should be adhered to but people forget the flag
represents who you are.
No one in our nation's history has ever done this
before and it should not have been done this time.
There was no logical reason for changing the way the
flag is worn or how it looks.
If someone asked me if it was alright to spell my
name backwards, I'd tell them hell no. Wrong is wrong.

I'm sorry that I don't know the answer to this, and I have nothing much to add to this conversation other than to ask what the 'sinister meaning' you suspect is???

jumpinjack, I wish I had something other than this to say. I wish that you and I were both paranoid and delusional. However, I fear, and suspect you are right. I'm afraid to point fingers, any more it seems to me, that both sides of the aisle, if not an outright smokescreen, are largely on the take. I am suspect of all of the world's big money. International relations, troop deployments, wars, incredibly huge national debt, dumbing down of education... am I a paranoid conspiracy theorist--I hope I am. 'Cause somethin' doesn't look right in this world today. Peace out, and maybe we should listen to the subtle messages of those like the Wachowski Brothers of Matrix and V for Vendetta fame... huh?

There's nothing paranoid about being informed
and intelligent. It's those who keep their eyes
closed that will blissfully be led to the gas
chambers. Figuratively of course. Only now a days
it's more more subtle and in the form of the
economy and international racism. Not the typical
kind based on color but much more wide spread in
terms of nationality.
There is much going on behind the scenes but are
subtly apparent if one just opens their eyes.

Always nice to hear from you anyway. I went into
a bit more detail above about one of the reasons
I believe it's being done.
The sinister reason goes much deeper than just
making as much money as possible for, as I stated,
a few individuals, corporations and Middle Eastern
countries.
I'll simply state for the moment, that it also has
to do with religion and a power struggle, amongst
several other things. I'm not talking about the
different factions of Iraqi's fighting against
each other. That's partly the U.S.s doing. I'm
talking about on a grander stage.
This is a very scary time for the human race. Much
more than most know or care to open their eyes to.
It involves much more than a silly Fiasco in Iraq.

Hanging the flag upside down means that something is wrong with our country/government or something. I don't remember where I read this, but maybe the backwards flag means the same thing.

The problem is that our military is wearing the
flag backwards on their uniforms on purpose. I
don't understand why we disrespect ourselves.

maybe this is their way of saying.im tired of all this war.an the want to turn back time.or maybe they are saying the hell with everything.the flag means nothing to them anymore.{im just guessing}

I wish that were the case but it was ordered to
be worn that way on their uniforms. As I stated
in another response in this discussion, Bush, as
president has certain powers when it comes to being
able to change certain things about the flag.
All I have to say is it's a disgrace and we've never
done it before. Read more below.

This is called in Armed Forces Parlance as "Arrogance Syndrome".
Americans can kill Afghans, Vietnamees, Latin Americans, Africans and Iragis. If Saddam do this on his people it is crime. If Americans do this on other natianlitis it is war against crime. Liberty, Equality Justice only guranteed to the Americns not to any other citizens.
If one allows to conduct such trials and wars like that of Irag lot of US Prescidents skeltens will stand in witness box for the excesses they committed.
One is not kid to forget how the Imperialists ruled the colonies!Do you want to count the skeltons across the globe?
When the soldiers cannot understand the reason for such attack, when the cannot find any weapons of mass distruction, when the use million dollor bomb to destroy a 100 dollor tent then they simply wear the ranks upside down. And this is called as " Arrogance Syndrome" and also " Ignorance syndrome' as they cannot decide the decision.
Intersting, but you wont agree to this argument, I suppose.

Why would I disagree with you? Have you read any
of my responses or other discussions? You say it
very well. The only thing I would beg to differ
with you on is, our troops have no say in what
they do. Once you sign up for the Armed Services
you sign your soul over to the government.
I know you think it's due to arrogance but it's
actually greed and power by our corrupt leaders.
Unfortunately for the rest of the world, until
someone puts our government in it's place, you'll
have to put up with it.
I don't like it any more than anyone else would in
any of the countries my government bullies around.

It appears it was kept quite and hush hush from both
the public and the media. I can't believe no vets or
other group has spoken out against this travesty.
It also appears that Bush as president has certain
powers to do things as he sees fit with the flag.
Check the links given.
I personally think there is something much deeper
in his decision to change the direction of the flag.

I have never heard of anything so bizarre, and the very long and complicate explanation, huh? something not right, I mean hang the flag like it should hang, why make something so simple so darn complicated? Why did you ask if someone from the Middle East could answer this. Do you think there is a more sinister meaning behind this.
