SCORES of dead mice, droppings and sliced loaves nibbled by rodents were found at a Merseyside supermarket. The store was given a £16,000 fine after an inquiry was sparked by a customer who bought a loaf of bread which had been nibbled. The Farmfoods store in Kirkby was penalised by Knowsley magistrates after they were presented with evidence of mice infestation by environmental health officers. The investigation team then bought another loaf and discovered it had been nibbled by mice, which had eaten through the packaging and into the centre of the loaf. Officers who then searched the Cherryfield Road store also found evidence of mouse infestation with ready-to-eat food exposed to contamination, droppings behind feezers and dead mice. The company pleaded not guilty, but Knowsley magistrates rejected their defence and found them guilty on all charges. Cllr Ken Keith, Knowsley’s cabinet member for corporate and customer services, said: “Knowsley council’s environmental health and consumer protection division is committed to protecting the public. “Knowsley residents deserve the highest standards and I hope this verdict sends a clear message to other food businesses in the borough that the cleaning of premises and hygienic food production is of paramount importance.” The company was found guilty of two food hygiene offences and one offence of selling food that was unfit for human consumption. It was fined £10,000 for selling unfit food, £3,000 for unclean premises and £3,000 for inadequate pest control measures in place. Farmfoods Ltd was also ordered to pay costs of £7,235. A spokesman or Farmfoods said: “This is the first time in 50 years of trading that anything like this has ever happened to Farmfoods. “We take matters of health and hygiene very seriously. This is very much a local matter which took place more than a year ago and was dealt with at the time.” hey what does everyone think about this? this is truly disgusting and this supermarket is low standard. what would be your reaction if you bought bread like this? how would you complain? i would like to hear a lot of peoples views on this. thanks in advance

Well I for one certainly wouldn't go back to that shop! Once you hear about contamination and the presence of mice and a big question mark over their health standards it will put most people off for life. Some will return. I for one wouldn't see me step foot in that shop again! Could you imagine I would like a crusty loaf please... Sir would you like it sliced? No thanks How about a nibbled slice or would like currants? Ewwww... We don't have any Farm Foods stores where we live, but I guess it was an isolated incident anyhow.

What do I think? It's sick. I'm not sure how the supermarket(s) could sell something without knowing this before hand and I'm glad I not one of them. Although I do kinda feel sorry for them, as it's not a nice find when it comes to surprises. How would I complain? I wouldn't shop in them stores and let them know I'm disappointed. If everyone did this, It would hit their pockets and make them think. Kudos, ~Joey

Well lols was just about to go and make lunch but i feel a bit too sick right now! How could the staff at that shop let the problem get so bad - they MUST have known there was a problem, there would have been signs, little brown pellet signs if nothing else! We have a farmfoods here in Stirling and its a great shop, kept very clean, I have seen them moving freezers to clean behind unless, oh no, they were trying to catch Mickey weren't they.......

I'm sorry but that made me feel almost physically SICK! I would certainly have gone back to the store to complain and then no matter what the outcome of that, I would have called Environmental Health AND gotten a lawyer involved. We as consumers put our trust in places like these to serve fresh food to a high standard to improve our lives and so we can continue to thrive. We don't expect our trust to be abused to such a low standard. How can this store have had such a bad infestation and not gotten it sorted. Surely they must have noticed things if their products were being nibbled at. It's just disgusting.
