A Day In My Life As A Carnie! circa 1968 LOL

As a carnie (one who works a carnival) life was very rough & hard on me. Luckily it was when I was young. Very young actually as I was just a teenager. The hours were usually from 5 a.m. till about 2 or 3 a.m. Not very much sleep. Now the sleeping was a different issue all together. I usually slept in the back of one of the semis or in one of the enclosed rides like a haunted house or fun house. Once a week some carnies would pool their money to get a hotel or motel room. There was usually 5 or more that pitched in sharing the room without the staff knowing there’s be that many. I’m sure they knew. How couldn’t they really. Now as far as baths, showers while with the carnival, there was no such thing except when we got a room. There were always a few galvanized tubs & a hose. Yes very cold water wash downs, baths if you weren’t afraid of being seen nude by anyone walking behind the semis. The eating was the hardest part as a teen in a sense. It was all candy, hot dogs, and ever so often a good meal at a restaurant while traveling. Very seldom while at a sight did I eat at a restaurant. Washing clothes at the nearest Laundromat was always a joke as people knew who we were & made snide, rude comments all the time. I lived with it & never let it get to me mentally. Now the days started early to wash down all rides, tarps on games, & check all equipment in the area. Then a complete through the lot cleaning up any debris not cleaned earlier. That took from 5 a.m. usually till about 9 a.m. We’d have 2 or 3 hours to clean up, eat, relax, & chat with other carnies etc. Then usually noon at most places sometimes as early as 9 we’d open for the public. Then it was usually fun all during the day. After the carnival closed for the night it was time for the hard work again. Cleaning the ride or game I ran at the time. Then closing, shutting it down. Meaning move everything inside the rides, cars etc, & latching the tarp down over the game. Then it was off to clean the whole lot of food debris trash etc. Unreal the stuff I’d find. I recall finding a $100 bill on the ground next to a game I ran. Lucky days like that happened a lot as most people are actually careless at a carnival. Then came the time to turn in our stats, ticket stubs, earnings, company share of game earnings, etc. Then back to walking the whole lot double checking for messes. We always had problems with local critters getting at the garbage cans etc. So that was the next step. Make sure the cans all had lids tightly placed & the dumpster was closed. If we were at a sight near a lake we’d go swim/bathe at this time. By now it’s close to 2 a.m. and bedtime. So this is just a sampling of my daily life with the carnivals from many years ago. Hope you all liked it. I’m looking forward to all responses also. I am happy to share my life here to a point. HAHAHA!

It was a hard life but also good fun and you got to see lots of places and meet new people.
My uncles travelled with the fair in England in the late 60's and early 70's. They had some wild times too, they were older teens then so perhaps it was a little different for themas there was always lots of girls involved, lol.

Grandpa Bob, that was a very interesting, and educational posting. I never gave it much thought, or realized how hard it was. I gave you a + rating for this post. Thank you for sharing a bit of your life with us.

This is amazing stuff Bob. Exactly what ages were you, & how long did you work at the carnival? Did you make close friendships? It sounds a fairly rough life. Especially not eating good healthy meals. What prompted you to eventually leave the carnival?
Hope to hear more of your circus/ carnival life.

Wow Grandpa Bob, I had never stoppep to thing about how much work went on behind the scenes at a carnival. I am glad that there were/are hard-working people such as yourself to bring so much fun and enjoyment to those of us who enjoy the carnival! I'm sure there are lots of negatives (long hours etc) but also a host of positives! You got to travel, meet tons of new people and things that most do not ever get to experience!

O my Dear Grandpa Bob. Firstly it really seems that you are doing a very good of "Cut/Paste" utility. I feel that to recall the memories, the olden as well as golden days is very good and makes us happy no matter how much the gone days were hard. One having so many things in life, off course reserves the right to share. I think while writing the above you must have enjoyed too much for two reasons firstly, the beautiful teenage and secondly your hardwork to get yourself a self sufficient one. The so much hardwork and the difficulties you faced are very much inspiring. Thanks for telling a hidden talent of yours. Have a nice day!

Hi Grandpa Bob, didn't realize all the work that went into being a carnie. You guys really did have a tuff job, and on top of that a responsibility to keep children and adults safe on your rides.
When I was younger I loved going to the carnivals it was so much fun. Then if you had pretty friends the carnies liked we got to ride for free. Ahhhh those were the days. Often thought what it would have been like to be a carnie. Thank-you for sharing your story, I enjoyed reading about it.

hi there, Grandpa Bob.. That sounds like a really full day! I used to work a cook shack when nineteen and twenty.. it was for a couple of weeks each summer. I didn't have a grueling day like you did! Just some cooking.. I liked the atmosphere of the carnival at night.. after most folks went home.. I only met one actual carnie though.. or not even I, but some friends of mine, he was very talkative! And friendly.. I do have some good friends, a couple who lived the carnie life for three or four years when they were in their late 20's. They liked it! I never knew how much work it was though!

That is quite a job1 Sounds like more work than fun to me. I wouldn't do ll with the few hours sleep and lack of hot showers.... Not me. When I was younger I wanted to be in a circus. I wanted to be the contortionist, and was pretty good with it (My joints allow me to bend and twist oddly.)but it was certain my parents wouldn't let me run off to travel with a bunch of strangers.... heh.

WOW! That had to be fun though, even if it was hard work. I met some carnie friends a few years ago and would listen to the stories they would tell and it was all so interesting to me. I always said as a kid I was going to run away with the carnival, but never did. I went to college instead. I still think it would have been a dream job even with the hard work.

Wow Grandpa Bob, that really is a lot work. I know it must fun working at a place like that but you really worked for your money. That sounds rough. How many different states did the carnival travel to?

Sounds like a lot to take care of. I'm sure people don't think of all the things that go along with being a carnie. People just take their kids to the fair or carnivals and don't understand all that must happen for one of those things getr up and running, to ensure safety, and to allow people of all ages to have a good time. On the other hand I'm sure there are alot of us who as a child dreamed of running away and joining the carnival.

Grandpa Bob,
It must have been as scary a life as it was an exciting one (unless you were one of those kids who simply knew no fear)!
Its no one's business if you don't want to 'talk' about it but I was wondering if you were a runaway, had lost your family or perhaps had a relative who was also a carnie and traveled with you. I just have a hard time comprehending the circumstances that would put a 13-year old "alone" (without a caring adult) on the road with a carnival.
Great and informative story though. Definately a "+".

Hello grandpa, I had already read your previous dicussion about carnival life. I had also stated that I have, more or less, an idea of what's behind the scenes. You have certainly went through a lot of rough times. I wouldn't know if I can do the things you went through. The only difference between the story I read and your thread here is the place where you sleep. The story I read describe having many trailers around the arena. I should continue following up on some of your wildest adventures, grandpa. Happy posting to you too.
