Vinegar has got to be one of the most useful products in the home! It isn't just for pickles! we use it for cleaning (often times with the addition of baking soda), it is great for removing calcium deposits from the coffee maker, we use it as a hair rinse, detangler, and remedy against dandruff., we've even put it on our insect bites for relief. What do you use vinegar for (besides salad dressing :) )?

well I really don't use it for anything but cooking. Although I have used it some recipes that were sort of surprising, like there is a recipe for cupcakes with cream cheese in the middle that includes vinegar. Can't taste it at all. I'm not quite sure what its function in the recipe is, but those cupcakes sure were good.

I have a cake recipe that calls for vinegar too - I think it is for a chemical reaction with the salt - a base and an acid? did the cupcake recipe omit baking soda/powder?

I just looked the recipe back up and no, it had baking soda in there too. But you must be right about a chemical reaction. Now I'm curious. I may try to look it up. I think I also may make the cupcakes. :)

Timely topic. I was discussing with my friends the uses of vinegar over lunch today. According to my gracefully svelte friend, one teaspoon of vinegar a day will make you lose 10 lbs a year. The more vinegar you took, the faster you will lose weight.

now, I have not heard that one, but I am certainly willing to be a test subject :) I have heard that it helps to breakdown gallstones, lower cholesterol, and cleanse the bowel.

I have used straight vinegar to clean my windows. Left them cleaner than Windex!

I take apple cider vinegar by the shotglass, for health, and I use vinegar as a de-greasing agent in my hard to clean pans. It works better than anything else!

I've used it infused with herbs as a hair rinse, but I really don't like the smell! It sort of takes my breath for a second. Hmm, wonder if I let it sit open a few minutes if that would subside. Anyone have experience with this?

It is the best hair rinse I've ever used. It detangles, it leaves the hair squeaky clean and shiny - so soft. It removes all the residues that have built up on the head as well. I've never tried it with herbs in it though. My daughter had a difficult time with the "fumes" as well, she applies hers from a little squirt bottle and dilutes it a little with water when she puts it in the bottle.

Ok, I've used vinegar for a lot of things but never hair rinse - LOL now another use. My two biggest uses are now window cleaner and diet help.
