This is a loaded question for me. I do agree that Scorsese deserved an Oscar for his marvelous career and longtime work as a director. Do I necessarily believe he deserved it for "The Departed?" No, I actually don't.
Most people have acknowledged that "The Departed" was not his best work, not even in the area of "crime" films that he does so well. It's a good film, but not his best. I found "The Departed" to be a good, but overrated film. I think most people simply found it good enough to finally justify giving him an Oscar (which he's more deserved for other films). I think most people have been wanting to give Scorsese an Oscar, and "The Departed" was a good enough excuse to justify it. (which I agree with).
Of the five nominees this year, he was the most obvious winner. To me, the only other option was Inarritu for "Babel," and even his film was flawed.
So, I suppose my response is I'm glad he won an Oscar, but I'd have prefer he won one for a different film. Still, "The Departed" was a nice return to form for him and since no other directing nominee really stood out I'm glad Scorsese won.
