Ok we do rely on technology a lot these days but we had telephones long before computers and planes were actually flying too. We managed to survive quite easily without cellphones/mobiles even up until about 10 years ago. I remember when we would arrange to meet friends at a certain time and make a point of being there on time and not be able to ring them up just as you're leaving home (late) and say you're on your way and stuck in traffic. Obviously without computers you and I wouldn't wouldn't be able to communicate this way nor would the millions of people online who have friends around the world they chat to online. The internet has been a bane in the life of telecoms providers. My landline phone rarely has any charges on it aside from the monthly rental charges. BT had been fleecing me on my call charges for years, now I'm giving my business to Skype who are much cheaper and free to call others who have Skype too. Things like VOIP would not be possible without computers so there are a lot of things we rely on and make our lives easier.
If you think about it though this way: before I used to have a landline phone and make calls from there and pay whatever BT said I owed them. Now I have to pay a monthly charge for having broadband and a monthly charge for my mobile phone. I'm actually spending a whole lot more on telephony than I did 10 years ago but then again I'm earning a lot more than I did back then so I don't really notice...
