Nope, I always chos the space in front of the door, so if the elevator is full I will stand in the backside of the elevator facing the elevator's door.
Have yu ever try to take the space in the front of the door and face at the people ? I have, and it's funny, whenever I see people right in the eye, they always throw their face somewhere.. LOL

Normaly I also chose stand as near as posible to the door. But I will stay at the back if there is view to the shopping center. Sometimes I stay infront and try to see the others, most of them are talking to the friend and try to be busy or staring at the wall if they are by themself.

I try to go to the side with the buttons for the convenience, but I would assume the people that take the corners must like the idea of having a good spot to brace themselves in case the elevator drops. :o
Is it only in one certain elevator that you've noticed this or do you notice it in all of them? That might tell us alot. LOL

I always go to the back of the elevator (if it's not already occupied) because I feel uncomfortable with someone staring at my back :)
